Is it okay to not say “hello”?

I use both typing and emotes, but I don’t mind if the other person only uses emotes. But I agree with a lot of you that it’s weird if they don’t acknowledge you at all.

I think emotes are fine. When I'm trading with someone or visiting someone I always talk to them via another platform (e.g. Discord, Reddit), so we can continue talking through those chat functions. The keyboard on the switch is just horrible to use and I'm usually too lazy to get my phone to type with that. I would never fault someone for just using emotes even if I weren't talking with them somewhere else. If they didn't use any emotes or say hello, that would definitely be rude. In all my trading though, I've yet to have anyone ignore me, so that's nice.

I use the Nintendo phone app to type so it is not too bad, it just sucks we only have enough room for half a sentence.

I always try to say something and will often compliment the island if it is nicely set up.

recently i've just been using the in game touch screen to type out small messages (my syntax is normally limited to hi!, ty!, the occasional tysm!, yw! or np! (interchangeable), and longer messages if there's something i really need to say. sometimes i just use reactions but most of the time the other person is typing as well so i just type anyway

When I host or trade, I usually have my switch app open. I just like interacting through words but I also know not everyone wants the app or has it open.

I'm totally okay with others using the reactions only. I've used them too as I'm not always attached to my phone.

There was an instance where I visited an island and I entered the wrong villager house while the host ran in circles.

When I came out, I used the bashful reaction like "oops, sorry!" And they did the laugh reaction.

Typing out text is really hard for me when I’m playing in docked mode. If someone visits me and didn’t say anything but communicated via emotes instead I would totally understand why and that would be fine by me.

I usually wave and say hello, but I use the nooklink app to do that cause it's way faster.

If somebody just waves at me I think that's fine, I usually just wave back. The important thing is that you don't just immediately run off or slip away from the host, any kind of greeting is fine imo

As long as I'd get some kind of acknowledgement as the host, any greeting is fine with me. Typing can take a long time on the Switch, so I find myself emoting more often than not anyways!

The only times when I could see saying hello by text vs. emoting being more useful would be if you do not see the host after getting to the island, as you can't see emotes from far away but you can see messages. Also, if you need to communicate to the host/the host needs to communicate with you, doing it over text would be easier than playing charades.

Though I guess there's a difference in between "I dropped this for you over here", which can be communicated by running quickly around the object, and something like "Can I check out your shops?"... can't really emote the last one.

I generally prefer to only use emotes and save the actual talking for direct messages, Reddit comments, etc. I'm also the type that just wants to finish the transaction as fast as possible and get back to my own game. Anxiety, yay!

I heard that theres an app which makes it faster to type or something...

I prefer going to the beach and writing my messages with footprints in the sand. Very ergonomic.

I much prefer to just use emotions, although I do have the app and use that I'd prefer to just use the emotes. I usually just follow what the other person does though, if they say hi then I say bi back, if they don't then I usually just wave.
