Is it okay to not say “hello”?

the in-game keyboard is a nightmare, especially with the character limit, so i see no problem with just using emotes to communicate. when i'm a host i don't think any differently of people who type w the keyboard vs. people who use emotes. as long as i'm being greeted & acknowledged in some way, i'm happy :)

Typing on the Switch is super tedious, so I use the keyboard on the switch app. My conversations usually go “Hello! Nice hybrids.” And “Thank you so much!” I think people know the normal interface is pretty tedious and some people are in a big hurry, so nobody is going to be weirded out if you’re quiet unless you don’t use emotions and run off to steal fruit or trample.

I think there's a lot of people who find typing on the Switch to be tedious, so I don't think there's anything wrong with just emoting if that's what you prefer! Personally, I usually use the Switch Online app to type from my phone, which makes it a lot easier.
Such a life saver!! Although, it does have one down side, your character just stands there. Usually when you type on your switch, you character will get into a pose, that's why I usually activate the thought reaction as I type on my phone. That way they know I'm typing and not just standing there.

I do a combination of reactions and typing, but reactions are easier. It's frustrating to type on the switch, especially when I'm playing on my TV!

I often rely on emotes in the game to do the job for me!
This is what I do, too. The keyboard in-game is just bad (well, it's as good as it can be really, but typing on the Switch is just awkward), I revert back to typing like I was 12 again most of the time "hi!:)" "ty!!" whatever is quickest to type out, and rely on the emotes.

If I'm hosting, I wouldn't expect anything more honestly - taking the time to type out a big message on the Switch is time consuming for both of us, so I wouldn't want anyone feeling like they had to do it. Friendly wave will do!

Just a tip for folks who play the game docked. You can actually hook up a USB keyboard to type on the in-game keyboard! I like it even more than using the NSO app on my phone. It's even faster for me than trying to find the correct emote (I really wish we could set additional emote wheels with L3 and R3...).

I've done a handful of trades where the other person only used emotes, and I'm cool with it. I totally get that it can be anxiety-inducing, especially with the slow in-game keyboard, or if it's just difficult to physically type in all the letters, etc.

For a specific trade where someone is visiting for a short time, just doing emotes is fine. I type a lot, but I don't expect others to. But I would be super anxious if, say, I opened my town just casually up to a bunch of folks, and someone didn't bother greeting me and just started running around. So I think if the host isn't at the gates (i.e.: you can't wave to them), maybe just a quick, "Hi!" and "Bye!" would be good. Or just hash everything out in PMs/wherever you're talking with the host to let them know when you're coming and thank them afterwards.

i personally will say hello but i don’t mind if people use the ‘greetings’ emotion instead - i understand trying to type can be stressful and time-consuming so it’s no big deal. however, i find that not saying hi/using the ‘greetings’ reaction at all and just coming and going silently is a bit rude imo. i mean, you don’t come into someone’s house, do whatever it is you’re there for and then leave without a single word to the host - i understand being in a rush but it doesn’t take longer than 5 seconds to click ‘greetings’

I always type a greeting when arriving. Then I type out a thank you and have a nice day and goodbye before I leave. I also will type out if I can buy anything from the nooklings shop. But I try to use the app since it's faster. But I think using the emote is also fine how you do. But for me, I feel like at least "hi" "thank you" and "bye" are necessary (for me)

i usually just do the greeting emote when i arrive/host nwn but then again i am always at the airport. i think it is good etiquette to stay by the airport until the host greets you, unless they say otherwise.

When I visit islands, it gives me bad anxiety to have to type things out, so I often rely on emotes in the game to do the job for me! When I enter a town, I wave, give off flowers, etc to show my appareciation to the person for letting me visit. I also thank them afterwards in dms!

Do you guys think this is okay? What do YOU do in towns to communicate? o:

I recommend the Switch Online app! With that, you can type messages via your phone and it's super easy. With that said, don't tress :) I use emotes sometimes too if I didn't get my phone out in time. Honestly sometimes I prefer it over just a simple "hi" because it looks expressive and isn't as dry.

I'm really bad at the in-game keyboard myself, but I'll warn my visitors of that ahead of time through messages here. I 90% of the time use emotes in the game instead, then I'll type out a proper message in DM here thanking them and such. Again though, I let people know ahead of time that I'll be speaking minimally in game. I'd feel rude to just show up on an island and not speak at all or respond to messages.

This is how I do things too.

I either use emotes or talk to them using the Switch app or messenger if I connect with them via a FB group. I think if you at least use an emote you aren‘t being rude so I wouldn’t worry :)

I don't use the switch virtual keyboard, it takes me too long and I feel awkward because people are waiting on me forever while I stand around with a blank stare typing.

Instead... if I type, I use the switch app on my phone to be quick. Usually, I do that cute wave when I visit because I feel like it's a mandatory emote, honestly.

What gives me anxiety is when we're done trading and they use the "Joy" emote. I'm not a fan of this emote, so I don't like doing it myself, but when they do it, I feel like I have to reciprocate or I'm being rude... so sometimes I throw that emote out and just... wince, honestly.

I much prefer clapping after a transaction and laughing because it's cute.

I have anxiety and getting into the multiplayer aspect took some courage, but I think typing out a greeting and goodbye is better than just using the emotions by themselves. But it's completely fine if you keep the chatting to the pms, typing with that AC keyboard can take some time.

I have a switch lite and I got very used to type on the screen, so I am usually very fast and I even give some pointers, ask questions, etc. But I completly understand when someone just wave or use other emote.

If you're using the emotes it's at least acknowledgement so I think that's fine. I like typing things out but I use the Nooklinks app because it's so much quicker. When I do trades I feel happy typing out basic things and telling people I hope they have a lovely day as they leave or as I go but that's just me. I wouldn't take offense to someone just using reactions.

Oh thank god more people who feel the same way.

I always greet, but...It's such a pain to type, and I feel awkward... Anyone who comes to Hesperides for whatever, feel free to not talk to me if you don't want to! lol

I try to keep my greetings short. Typing is such a hassle. I wish they gave us pre-written texts to choose from.

I stick to just hi, bye, tnx, np when I visit for trades. Then I message the person afterwards to give my full thanks.

It gets the message across. I definitely wouldn’t mind. Also typing in new horizons is horrible

emotes work just as well as typing 'hello'!! but i feel so uncomfortable when someone doesn't do either
