Is it okay to not say “hello”?

I always have my switch app on just in case the person I'm trading with wants to chat! Otherwise, I typically say hi/tyvm/np and use emotes lol.

I've seen a few people only use emotes. I'm fine with that and get the point they're trying to make.

I personally type, but I have a keyboard connected to my Switch's dock. It's super quick to say whatever with that.

IF I have the Switch app open and I'm not covered in rats and I didn't get an unexpected phone call then I type! If not, I use reactions. I feel kind of guilty when I don't type type - especially when the other person does. Mostly cause I don't want them to think I am ignoring them haha.
But I also really enjoy the voice chat on the app and I wish people just used that more often because it's super easy to just talk that way! I understand not everyone is comfortable with talking like that though so it's all good.

i personally use the nintendo app on my phone to type messages in game and a mixture of the emotes! i usually keep it to the minimum hi and bye and tyvm since typing is a little tedious/laggy even with the app. the only time i really have a problem with people not emoting or saying anything in game is when i host and they’re silent throughout even after i’ve greeted them and next thing you know, they’ve left the island. it feels a little impolite and kinda like i’m talking to myself. feels bad. 😔

Honestly, even with the Nintendo Switch app I don't feel super inclined to say hi, nor do I ever really expect people to say hi when I come onto their island or they come onto mine. I prefer just using the Greetings reaction instead, and then thanking them once I'm done and ready to leave their island or they've concluded their business on mine.

I always use the "greetings" emote when entering a town, and I've never had anyone complain about it 0v0

Typing takes way too long in this game so I typically just use emotes or type a quick "hi" and "ty."
If the other person seems to be a chatter, I'll feel less awkward about taking too long to type.

It's perfectly fine not to say hello! There are plenty of ways to greet besides typing it out, using a reaction is sufficient :)

Aw, that's the cutest and most delightful "problem" to have. :'D

Totally cool reasons why it's okay if you don't want to use the in-game chat:
  • It's anxiety-inducing
  • It's just too difficult and tedious
  • Just gotta pet the rats

I make it brief as trying to send an in game message without using the Nintendo app is painful.. I'll say Hi when I get there and TY when I leave..

I primarily use emotes and the usual hi/bye/ty/np like most people have said, and I feel like that's perfectly polite. Plus the emotes are so cute they're better than reading words imo 😊

But I definitely think running in and out of someone's island without saying/emoting anything is kind of rude, especially if you haven't already talked to the person here or on another platform in advance. But I find people only do this if I post a public turnip exchange code and is pretty rare. Everyone on here is really friendly!

I mostly use emotes because I'm used to the layout of the gamecube game's keyboard. The most I'll probably ever say is "hi", "tysm" for thank you so much, and "bye". :) I wish there were more people who use voice chat.
Does it cause lag? I would like to try it out but my internet is not so good. :(

I like to use both emotes and the switch online app to type! I've grown quite used to it :'D I've resorted to typing things like "hi" or "ty" just to keep things quick, but ideally, I'd type them out fully ahaha
I won't be offended if someone doesn't type out hello to me lol, since typing in-game is not ,, good lol. emotes are fine and cute!
if someone doesn't use emotes or types anything, then I'd feel kinda weird,, but I haven't had that happen to me since everyone here is generally very nice! :^)

Hehe it honestly is wholesome BUT they can be such jealous little snots!
They hate it when I do anything other than pay attention to them during out-time and aren't afraid to tell me their feelings! XD

But I agree! All the critters should get all the pets, even if it interferes on our ACNH trades :D

Can't read the book, just gotta study the rat booty. >_>

I always say hi but I don't mind at all if someone just uses the emotes or whatever. I'm really slow at typing, even with the app, so I'd probably be better off relying more on the emotes myself. I think it's totally okay!

As long as you interact in any way with the host, be it a typed out greeting or emoting, you'll be fine. It's only those that do not acknowledge the host they're visiting are perceived as rude.

I play exclusively on handheld, so I'm able to type out stuff like "hi!", "ty!" "np!" "bye!", but I've seen those that only emote and they're still cool in my book. It's only those that walk by without a single wave that make me a little paranoid, that they might be up to something (excuse me) nefarious.

I think as long as people don't completely ignore me, I'm fine with it!
Someone I traded with said hi and stuff and we completed the trade but when I said thank you and emoted, there was no response and then they sent me home which kind of upset me!

I try to always have the app open to I can easily communicate with people, but if they are only really using emotes I'll just use those back.
Sometimes I just use the greetings reaction and if they say hi, I'll say hi back!
