Is it okay to not say “hello”?

I hadn't played NH online yet, but I’ve only played NL online before and I would feel bad to not say hello visiting other players even sometimes on Club Tortimer I tend to say hello to be polite whenever there’s a new guest. But in NH, I feel like wanting to use reactions more if I ever get the chance to go online because it’s a bit tedious typing on the switch.

I often have the Switch app up and running before I fly to someone's island or open my gates. It's much easier to type this way, plus I can also have my greeting ready to send while I wait for the flight cutscene to end. As for emotes, I think it's fine if people reply with them instead of typing out words if they're in a bit of a hurry (or can't use the Switch app atm). I'd often send my greeting, then use the according emote to wave at them; nowadays, I use the Pleased emote to cutely greet/nod back at them.

It does feel pretty awkward if no one says anything at all in-game, unless you both happen to be speaking via a messaging service (ie. Discord, Messenger, etc.) or voice call (if you're friends).

I always say Hi in chat, I feel like im being rude if I don't ;-; Sometimes I just use the waving emote for saying bye though!

I say hi, thank you/you're welcome but I don't really feel offended if they don't say it back. All's it is a quick trade. Their's also the fact that lots people are coming over to buy/sell turnips and are in a hurry before they close. I feel a thanks in the end is necassary though for common courtesy at least.

Also, it's a bit troublesome to pull up the message app and type if you're on the tv or still trying to figure things out imo, so that could also be it.

Also emotes/reactions are an exception imo but again, no offense if they don't do it back.

I say "hi". its not that hard. when finishing of trades I say either "ty, tysm, tyvm" and I wave and leave. its weird if someone doesn't say it back to me, it actually bothers me. I understand if they might be in a hurry but at least I know why you wouldn't do it. it would be good if you're interacting with the host than juat coming and leaving without any interaction.

I always use my nintendo app to type. So I can type on my phone to the people on my island

I genuinely have really bad anxiety, so it IS that hard for me and a handful of others like me o:> I agree with the absolutely no interaction whatsoever, though, for sure!

i always type out "hi, bye, ty" when hosting or going for a trade. i've had times where the other person just emoted back and that's perfectly fine with me too, just as long as there was some sort of acknowledgement, i think both ways are fine.

I usually type "hi!" since I like greeting people, and "tysm!" after a trade but emotes work just fine too imo :) It's not that convenient to use the app so I can understand why people don't want to use it.

I prefer to say hi or welcome someone when I visit an island or when someone comes to my island, but I'm totally ok if people only emote! Although if something specific needs to happen like in trades or something, talking is the easiest way to go. For example, telling someone I'll be back is impossible with emotes but clapping for something good can't be replicated with text. There are pros and cons to both but whatever is most comfortable to the user is the best!

Edit: typo

I use the switch online app because it makes typing faster, but I’ve never thought of anyone who doesn’t type in hello as rude, I’m Just as happy with emotes.

I usually type out "hello!!" while the loading screen is going on~
I try to type "thank you!!" as fast as possible, and then I leave with "Take care and stay safe!" (which i copy & paste into the keyboard so I don't have to type it out)

I think just emotes is fine! Just some form of acknowledgement/being friendly to the person hosting or coming in, imo. I only take issue in instances like one I read here a few days ago, where someone just barged in with no greeting or emote and just started running around their island. Even if it's a short trade I always try to say "hi!" and "ty!" quickly lol, I get you though, I have long nails and I hate typing, too.

I'm the same way.. typing is so asdfghjk and I can't be bothered to open the app on my rl phone. I would say this is ok in my book.

Typing in-game is just not intuitive. Almost always when I'm playing with someone, I have a much better method of communication and use that instead. I use the emotions some, too. The wave is my way of saying thank you sometimes, so that's probably confusing. lol

is this aim'd at my post? It is hard to communicate on the dock at least... that's why I switch to handheld when I'm online. You do have a point though, it may be a bit odd to just come and go unless they thank you on the site afterwards and leave a positive feedback

as long as there is some form of greeting (typing, emotes, running around in circles idk) then it’s totally fine! i’m sure people who don’t greet in any way are nice but i feel so awkward just standing there ;;

I hate typing, so yeah, I trey to just emote most of the time. I get worried that people get angry/offended because of it though, so do type small messages like 'hi' or 'ty'. Sometimes I try to use the phone app, but it takes forever to boot up. :/

I think dialogue can lead to unnecessary awkward silences while the other person is typing (I use the nintendo app, but it can still be a little anxiety-inducing waiting for the other person to respond). I personally always say hello, thank you, and have a nice day, but I don't really expect others to all the time. I think a wave, a happy emote of some kind, and another wave is just fine.
