Is it me or do villagers lose their value when EVERYONE wants em?

I feel it too. The sheer amount of Raymonds/Marshals/Audies I see in pictures makes them seem less special as a villager to me. I'm not judging those who have them, but I feel better when I give more underrated villagers a chance.

What is represented on Instagram/Twitter etc., is not a representation of the types of villagers most people own. We don't have enough data to claim that most players only want cute villagers. This is statistics 101. Also, we don't know the percentage of people who are rabidly trading/buying cute villagers online, vs people who just take villagers as they come either.

I partially agree with this, except that the online community is large enough for AC in 2020 especially due to how much it blew up in popularity and you could probably extrapolate the data points we do have and apply them to larger unknown samples. I also think that just because a person doesn't have that specific villager in their town, it doesn't mean that they don't want them / prefer them. (Going back to my earlier point about there being villagers that are just better looking, as a whole, then others)

You want popular villagers that everyone else also want? Good for you.
You want unpopular villagers that not many others want? Good for you.
Either one option doesn't make you cooler, or more mainstream, or whatever. You like whoever you like, for whatever reason. Here's my opinion you kinda asked for but also not and got anyway 🙃

Also, I'm sorry, but this "value" decreasing thing because lots of people want it has kind of a nasty ring to me... No one cares if the whole forum has had your villager. If you enjoy having them, that's the only thing that matters.

I have some "popular" villagers on my dreamy list (Poppy, Zucker, Marshal, Stitches, Flurry), but not because I want to be popular, but because I genuinely like them. I've had my dreamy list since 2014, so the popularity of the villagers have not influenced my choice

I know that I call them overrated or love/dislike them.

..But I really like having Francine (I don't like Chrissy that much, sorry), Marshal (I really like the squirrel villagers, so he's included.), Genji (I already liked him) and Poppy (I like her since City Folk, the first game she appeared in.)

But I have seen people harass others for not having a 'popular' villager or harass them for having an 'ugly town' if they have a 'popular' living there.
Just sad.

Absolutely silly to base your villagers off of any influence outside your own like or dislike. If you can't have a villager because you think it makes you less unique go ahead but it's a bit of a delusion when this game has over 10 million players. For the first month of this game I've had my favorites from New Leaf, now I'm making my island full of the new crew as I like the idea of having villagers I've never had in a previous game.

I could care less what someone online thinks of my villager for the two seconds or so that they'll even consider it. I have to play with it for the rest of the game's life and that's the opinion that matters.
