Is homebrewing/customizing your 3DS homescreen safe/possible?

Im kind of scared of homebrewing my 3DS (unless its not required) but I really wanna try out customizing my homescreen. I have experience with modifying but hacking consoles not so much and i really dont wanna break my 3ds.

Any tips or simple tutorials?

also does the update version matter? if so which one does it need to be?
