This lady heres name is audie.. she had maybe 650 mil bells on NL without connecting or trading at all.... and i geuss nintendo made audie in her glory??? At first i thought that it was just a coincidence that her name was audie..

It's not 100% confirmed but it'd be a very specific coincidence that a loveable old lady that played a ****-ton of Animal Crossing is named Audie and Nintendo adds a new villager named Audie but it's just by accident.

I feel like she needs audie in her town....

Her Japanese name is Monika, so I'm pretty sure that her English name "Audie" is just a neat reference made by localization team, rather than villager herself being based on this old lady.
Im confused.. does audie have any relation to Monika?? Besides the fact that theyre names for the same character...

Exactly. I don't believe for a second that the villager herself is based on this lady (though that would be cool). Maybe when the game was translated into English the name was chosen as an homage but it's hard to say for sure.

No. Characters have different names in English and in Japanese all the time. Most likely they changed Monika's name to avoid the similarity with Monique (Jen/Jane in the Japanese version).

Molly is also named Monika in German.

Also, according to Nookipedia, Audie's name may indeed be a reference to the eponymous player character of Audrey Buchanan, that aforementioned woman who has played many hours of ACNL.

I don't believe the character is based on her at all (a brightly colored, athletic, popstar wolf doesn't scream "fun grandma" to me) but I feel there's a good chance the English name is a reference to her. It seems odd to be a TOTAL coincidence at least, since it's not exactly a common name.

I mean, they're just doing what we're doing- theorizing. There's no official statement on it. Their theory that it could relate to "audio" also makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, but these are language-specific choices. For example, Monique is named Monique in multiple European languages but some still kept Audie as Monica.

I wouldn't take Nookipedia's explanations of names and other things as canon. They're what might be the case based on speculation like ours because it's made by fans. It's not a direct quote from the game's translators.

Audie Explained

This was a thing not long after New Horizons was released. This elderly woman got some notoriety after her grandson posted a video showing off her New Leaf town.Nintendo has never come out and verified that they named Audie the wolf after this person(they obviously did),probably for legal reasons.

Exactly what I was saying. Unless it has an actual reference directly from Nintendo, it's not "proof". I think there's a good chance it's more than coincidence, but there's no confirmation. Like I said, the reference to audio actually makes more sense when you really think about it (the wolf has NOTHING to do with the RL Grandma Audie, but audio makes sense for a future popstar). But I think there's a chance someone said, "Hey, isn't that the name of that grandma?" and someone else said, "You're right! Perfect."

Again, though, that's just more fan speculation.

Which, until Nintendo confirms either way, is all we can do. There's no way to say for sure one way or the other right now.

aw dang before reading this thread I thought it was 100% confirmed that it was suppose to be named after Audie, im so sad its not confirmed, but perhaps like others are speculating its very likely the local Nintendo team for the US did this on purpose

Am I right in thinking that lady's grandchild is a member on here and shared this with us somewhat recently? May be wrong but if so they may know more about this!

Her name is Audie in English, Dutch and Russia. Everywhere else is Monika or some variant of it, with Germany being Katharina and Italy being Lupilia.

It isn't confirmed, but what's the harm in believing it to be true even if it isn't?

As far as I know, he isn't a member of this forum.

I don't think it's the grandson himself, I think those threads are just people linking to his Youtube videos.

I mean, there's no inherent harm... but some fans can get weird. Like, if something's not been confirmed, but people just ASSUME it's true, if it's ever officially denied some people get super angry about it. People can be weird. But as long as you take it with a grain of salt (it COULD be true... but could also be a total coincidence) there's no harm. If you wanna believe it, and/or have her on your island or draw fan art of her in honor of the real woman, that's cool! Just be nice if Nintendo doesn't confirm or even denies it.

I mean, MOST fans are good. But there are always fans (of anything) that take being a fan way too seriously, and seem to somehow think they have partial ownership in the material, just because they're so invested in it.

To the best of my knowledge there is no reason to expect her grandson uses TBT.

I do hope that Audie's name is a reference to this woman. She is lovely.

I'd agree that the wolf (or fox if you wish) design was probably already pre-made/developed before the video of the grandma got big. Just because the design of the character itself doesn't fit what I feel like is known for her and she didn't really seem to react much to the villager's design (her favorite character is/was filbert last I remember).
But I do think the name is too unique for it to not have been a reference of her added in in the last moment.
