Is anyone else having a hard time keeping up with the community..

I got to be honest, I don’t like the selling of villagers for ridiculous amounts. I think it’s unfair. Also feels a little like cheating. I have Raymond and Marshall, my friend wants Raymond and another wants Marshall when they both leave. I wouldn’t dream of charging them for taking them off me..

Thats not really exploiting... Thats just called being an ***hole/scamming

I know how you feel OP. I was disappointed with my first island hopping because I can't seem to locate my three main villagers. But don't lose hope on the community there are people out there who are willing to give a helping hand and give fair prices. I was able to adopt Marshal at a reasonable price. That person is really kind to accept my bid(It just so happens I'm the H/B) which is quite low for Marshal usual price. Also sometimes the AC gods are good because I got my other main just last night through island hopping.

I don't want to sound hypocritical since I was once frustrated with how mystery island tour works. But I did come to realized that I don't want to let this mechanic stop me from enjoying the game. Once Raymond's amiibo is out, I'm sure his prices will go down and I'm going to make sure I get one too to help those who want him!

Yes when we talk about exploiters it is people who take advantage of others who may not have "the knowledge" of what things are worth.

I mean, not necessarily. I got Raymond on my own by kicking every smug out that wasn't him with amiibo. I only time travel to cycle villagers, so I just got him that way. Game decided to grace me early on.

But if you mean keep up as in have tons of bells and tickets on hand? Definitely not. But I'm okay with that. I'm super behind in that regard. I only have 3m or so, and I'm still moving tons of buildings/houses. And 10 tickets to my name

Exploiting would also be taking advantage of people

really? i tt to get villagers out, and once i tted back a month and my turnips were selling for 177.

also, yeah it's hard to get raymond here, but i've been going on social media sites where the ac community isn't as obsessed with nmt, and i got raymond at a much more reasonable deal
if you dont mind sharing I'd like to know what sites you're using!

Yeah I know not everyone in the community is like this. Thankfully there are still fair people out there. I got Goldie and Beau for 10 NMTs each and I feel like that was a good trade. I don't mind paying like 50 NMTs for Marshal or Raymond, that's like 100,000 miles and considering the effort I made to make that much I feel like is worth the effort.. I just cant keep up with 100 even 1000 tickets.

I could probably summon marshal via amibo but idk of the glitch is still there
This is why the whole "let's sell the farm for a villager" looks even more bizarre.

People are throwing insane amounts of NMTs away trying to get a villager that - even if they're not summoned via amiibo - can simply never show up because of all the glitches present in the game.

I have someone who's willing to trade a few villagers with me as soon as the situation gets fixed (as the person in question has the amiibo of 3 out of 4 villagers I want), free of charge, and even if I could risk trading now, I wouldn't do it, because it could potentially glitch their game and my game as well.

Imagine people paying real money on eBay for NMTs just to win an auction for a villager that comes and then glitches the plot?

m8 I cannot believe how much some people are charging for selling turnips on their island on the turnip exchange site! I don't have 10nmts for an entry fee!
Dude. Same.
I make it a point to never visit islands that charge entrance fees... though, I will typically tip since the host deserves something for taking the time out of their day to open their island. =3
If enough of us start doing that, the charging trend will slow down.

Oof. I would never even want to be a part of that. 1-2 NMTs is fair considering all the work they have to do is hosting. But 10 is just plain awful. I just ignore those kind of posts to hopefully stop the greedy behavior and demands

Tipping is always good but we should try to never give the dishonest people business

Aw, ****. Here we go again with the TT/Dupe discourse.

In all honesty and if you wish to know why:
Amiibo/campsite villager glitch makes it hard to trade villagers and in my very honest opinion, they have the right to charge that high because cycling villagers is very RNG with TTing that I could take 30 minutes if I'm lucky or 5 hours if I'm not lucky. You're paying the time someone invested on getting the villager you need to get out (of course, not applicable to cycling shops as they go "my pace" route).

Raymond is a given because you can't summon him willynilly (via Amiibo) like every villagers (he's new and has nicer design). Marshal is merely a 100NMT but Raymond is subjective and dependent on the seller's personality. (Some wants to hardcap it to a cheaper price, some leaves it openended so the prices skyrocket.) Supply and demand has been like this since the beginning of time.

However, I do detest people selling him for IRL money. I know times are hard right now but this is borderline exploitative and illegal.
In Japan, he's selling for 20,000 yen. It's ridiculous. (and I'm sure it's a savestated Raymond because they're selling more than one LOL...)

I suggest you just have to wait and see the Earth Day update if they fix the Amiibo glitch. Prices should be cheaper once it's fixed as people can massproduce villagers to sell and oversaturate the market to the point of Tier 5 villager prices.

If you're looking for Raymond and don't have any smug villagers you're particularly attached to you can try the "campsite method." It really helps to TT, but can be done without. I can't find the post on reddit that explained it since the AdoptMyVillager subreddit is locked now, but I'll try to describe it (putting it in spoilers cause its a bit long)

So the campsite method is based on the assumption that the campsite tries to give you villagers of a personality type that you're missing, and my experiences (as well as others on reddit) have supported that.
To maximize your chances of getting Raymond (or any specific smug villager like Marshal - I was looking for Zell at the time), you first have to make sure that you have at least 1 villager of every personality type except smug. You don't have to have any plots open since he'll choose to kick someone out himself, but if you have a spare tent then that'll help with step 8.

So here are the basic steps:
  1. make sure you don't have any smug villagers
  2. TT day-by-day until you have a villager at your campsite (just watch Isabelle's intro - if you have a visitor then continue, if you don't then close the game, TT 1 day forward, and try again until you get a visitor)
  3. if its not the villager you want: save and quit, then TT forward a week
  4. walk around your island and check if any of your villagers are thinking of leaving (have though bubbles over their head). Say no (or yes, but then you have to wait until they've moved out to continue)
  5. TT day-by-day until Isabelle says you have a visitor again
  6. repeat steps 2-5 until you get the villager you want - in this case Raymond
  7. talk to him in the campsite, then save!!!
  8. play his games, then when he mentions which villager he's going to kick out: exit the game right away if it's someone you don't want to lose. Boot the game up again and keep trying this until he kicks out someone you want to replace
There are 35 smug villagers in AC, and maybe less than that in NH. So it shouldn't take as long as other personality types. There are max 65 peppy villagers so it might take longer to get Audie, but the same method applies.

All of this can be done without TTing if you want, just make sure you don't have any smug villagers and hopefully one of your next visitors will be the smug cat.

Good luck!

Edit: if you've been TT-ing day-by-day for months and haven't gotten a single campsite visitor (happened to me), try this:
  1. TT forward a year (I did 11 months so I have no idea what the cutoff is or if there even is one but it worked for me)
  2. look for the villager thinking of moving out and tell them no
  3. TT forward day-by-day (I had my first visitor in forever the very next day)

This worked for me and I ended up getting Raymond as my first visitor after moving out my only smug villager.

No one should have to pay such outrageous prices (in-game or IRL) for such sweet villagers that can be obtained in any game. Hope you all get your dreamies, whoever they may be 😊

Tbh, this is my push come to shove moment solution...

Julian is my dreamie and I was super lucky finding him island hopping... but Julian HAS an Amiibo. He'll be much easier for me to get back in the future.

I don't TT so it would take me a LONG time to do this method, but I am keeping it in my head as an option...

It reminds me of how that "the market regulates itself" bs works only in theory, but in reality, it's one of the most famous fallacies people love to believe.
