Invite friends animals early on?

For the third-fifth animals, can you invite a moving animal from someone else’s island or does it have to be a nook island or random?

If it's an open and available plot, then you should be able to get a villager from another island.

The only reason I questioned it was because I thought the first six animals personalities were locked.

You have to accept that one before you can amiibo/adopt.

I have not, in theory it should work tho surely

No, it theory it won't work because of the personality lock.

I invited 2 of the same personality from mystery islands. My first campsite villager wasn’t a smug, I didn’t have a smug already.
so in theory, it should. Because I’ve not had a personality lock bar the first 2 villagers you see on your island.
