Just to get straight to the point here is what you guys need to do to prepare for the update:

1. Have a lot of bells: For me I saved up like 50,000,000 bells (before anyone asks I am a day one player from 2020)

2. Have a lot of nook miles saved up: I have like about 230,000 nook miles at the moment but the average you should have is about 17,000 for the new nook items and features you need

3. Make a garden for the new crops: If you have too many flowers or extra space on your island make sure you take advantage of it.

4. Make a garden for the Gyroids: Since we know that we have to get Gyroid fragments, bury them, and water them its best to have a Gyroid garden to do this.

5. Make any changes to your island to add the extra Bridges and Inclines: This one is optional but if you want to have more bridges/inclines you might need to terraform your island.

6. Save up a lot of materials for crafting and cooking: Make sure you go to a lot of Nook Mile islands and gather enough materials you're gonna need to craft new items.

Hope this helps you guys! If there is anymore preparations you think should be important post down below.

Get out of my head! I literally made all of this lol.

I would also suggest: if you are planning to have multiple house to decorate, upgrade them before the update drops.

I have been saving bells religiously since Day 1. I am thrilled that I finally have a reason to use them!

On another note, make sure you clear the last 6-7 planks of your dock of decor— that is how much space Kappn’s boat needs.

Luckily for me I have like 7 homes on my main island (Destiny). So I am so ready for this update!

Oh a gyroid garden I had thought about that, that'll be a fun little build.... sounds like something I'll put outside Ribbots home....

I have about 12 million bells and about 120,000 Nook Miles. I believe that's enough in that department but I am playing every day and making the most of the Miles+.

I need to focus more on gathering materials.

Practically anything could be used for cooking besides the new crops. I saw mushrooms and I thought I saw manila clams and it appears that a recipe or two will need fish.

Oh right. I forgot I saw recipes that looked like we might need to catch fish. I am not sure if thats the case, but for the time being its better to save all these fish and sea creatures for Turkey Day.

I have done a lot on this list. I really should get more materials for crafting especially since I don’t have a lot of hardwood. The gyroid garden is a great idea.

Roxas you forgot the most important thing. Make sure your joycons and Switch are charged. That's a very good list and nice of you to throw out here for others!
Haha very funny, I always have my controllers charged before I even play the game.

You don't have to do anything if you don't want too, but yes these are excellent points to make!

I am well and truly on the road to having plenty of bells and nook miles and materials. I always hoard stuff like that so i'm set.

As for making space for farms and stuff, my island is flat now, so I have all the room in the world and I couldn't be more excited. 😍

The garden's gonna be a pain because my villager houses are arranged in such a way that they don't have very wide front yards, so I'll probably put some kind of communal garden shared by all villagers.

There're no important things to do, as the update is not event - we don't need to be prepared, we are not time-limited. This update stays with us forever.
I think it was just meant as a wholesome list for those who want to actually prepare but don't know where to start; it's obviously not meant for everyone.

While I agree that we really don't need to do anything to prepare because we'll have access to the content indefinitely once we download it and so there's no rush, some people do like to get things ready so they can hit the ground running, so to speak, once the update hits. I myself have been trying to get a few more bells and Nook Miles and did save some extra resources like fruit, iron, and wood, because I didn't have any in storage. But that's about all I have done. We don't even know if everything they showed will be available Day 1 or if there will be certain requirements we have to fulfill first. Like with cooking, we won't have access to a lot of the ingredients right away like flour and sugar so it might take a few days before we can actually make anything.

One thing I have been trying to do is hold onto certain furniture items I will probably want Cyrus to customize for me. I already have more than enough bells and Nook Miles, so I don't really need to do anything more there, just do it to have something extra to work for. I hope to take things a bit at a time once the update does hit so I don't rush everything!

I've played every day since launch so I already find plenty of things to do daily. It will be nice to have more things to do, but we don't have to get it all done at once. I actually plan to stay off the Internet for a few weeks and not look anything up because I want to experience as much as I can on my own without getting spoiled. Can't wait to see what surprises are in store! And I'm really curious how we go about unlocking the cafe and if Kapp'n and Harriet just start showing up or what.

I created my garden plots, because I want to make bank on pumpkins right now. I'll thin that down to one plot for pumpkins and have the rest for other crops. I hadn't thought about having a plot for gyroid fragments. That's a good idea, and I think I have an extra one laid out. If not, there is space to put a small strip down.

I will be having Nook demolish the stairs leading to my treehouse the day before the update drops. I plan to put either a ladder kit or vines on the cliff, instead.

Pre-ordering HHP, so I can start unlocking that furniture right away.
