After he is unpacked, you can use an amiibo card to have someone else move in and pick a villager to kick out.

Also, did you streetpass anyone? That is a possibility.

i streetpassed someone but i didn't get any acnl streetpasses.

that's what i'll probably end up doing, using an amiibo card. the only thing is that then i'll be back up to 10 villagers and will have to wait for someone else to move out again, and the ones i'd want out are also amiibo card villagers that'll take longer to move out >:V

Did you visit another town that hadn't cleared their void? Or have someone visit you without clearing their void? That's the only other way for a 10th villager to move in.

i was doing a handful of trades yesterday selling flowers so that must be it. i don't know how the void things work or how its cleared but i did visit a couple of towns, 3 in total i think. :(

That would have been what did it, then. How the void works is if a villager moves out without moving to someone else's town, they enter 'the void'. Once a villager is in the void they can randomly move to someone who visits, is visited, or street-pass. The chances aren't high or a guarantee, but it does happen. In order to prevent this from happening many people visit a town that already has 10 villagers. This 'clears' their void and the villager can no longer randomly move into someone else's town.

In the future it may be good practice to mention when making a trade that you have less than 10 villagers in your town, or ask them directly if they have anyone in their void. It's also good practice for a person with someone in their void to either ask if the person they're visiting/letting visit has less than 10 villagers, or else just always clear their void before engaging in trades. Sometimes people forget though, which is understandable.

Unfortunately, people can't really help getting a villager from a streetpassed void, so if you get streetpasses where you are it's sometimes best to turn of the feature if you have 9 or fewer villagers.
