I’m tired of being told I’m playing this game wrong xD

If you haven't already told them that that's how you play your game, then you should, since they love to ask you why you haven't done anything with your island.

I hate to be that person, but you're going to continue to get tired of it until you stop caring. And to be honest, you're still probably going to be tired of it. People like attempting to force others to do things they would do because it gives them validation of themselves. The human race is manipulative, and that isn't going to change any time soon.

Just play how you want to play. If anything, when someone tells you what to do just agree with them and don't do it.

I haven't but all my friends know I'm more focused on waiting for future updates and finishing my encyclopedia/catalog before seriously designing/decorating my island (to a degree I've thrown things around outside but I wouldn't say anything that might not be later changed).

Have you told your friends all that you said here? If not, I think you should because that should, assuming they are mature, make them take a step back and reconsider their attitudes. If not, well...I'd probably take a break from playing with them because friends shouldn't be giving you grief over a videogame.

They say something...you say...
"I understand you chose a different approach and focused on decorating/designing your outdoors which is cool. I'm focused on different aspects for now and prefer to wait down the line to do the same, hope you can respect that!"
They still keep saying something, you say...
"Hey, it really bothers me that you keep pushing me to play the game how you are even though I explained how I prefer to play it, can you please dial it down?"
They still have something to say...so you take a break from playing with them but they notice/ask to come to your island...
"I just think we should take a break co-oping together or I prefer to visit only your island for now because when you visit mine you seem to be overly upset by how I'm focusing my island. When it doesn't upset you or when I decide to get to the point you are then you can start visiting mine again."
They still get an attitude...
(throw out the whole friend) Life is short, ain't nobody got time for that.

Oof, I'm sorry your friends are treating you like that. :( yeah, when my friend and i play together we usually water each others' flowers and fish and catch bugs. :/ terraforming is really a completely different beast and not everyone's top priority.

Posting cos I love ur kittie 😍 AC has always been something you enjoy for personal reasons. I love the chilling out and fishing (used to do fishbait 😊) to de stress.

The pressure to get a “perfect” Island isn’t really what the game is about. 5 stars? Yeah mine is but it is not perfect. Just has right amount of trees/flowers 😂

Some people are so artistic and creative I am amazed. I just do me and you do you 😉

I just ignore what others think. Play the game the way you want. Besides it is easy to run out of stuff to do except daily things. You might as well take your time.

Yeah that is probably one of the best traits of animal crossing is how open-ended the game is meant to be for each individual person, and not just a beginning and end that everyone follows, but a sandbox that can go anyway!

Sounds like you just need to have a candid conversation with your friends. It's just a game, and we shouldn't let shame and judgement come in and ruin our good time. <3

Animal Crossing is such an open-ended game that there really isn't a wrong way to play it. Heck, many people have ended up with creative results by playing Animal Crossing in non-conventional ways. I'd say just do your own thing and ignore what anyone else says. It's impossible to play Animal Crossing the "wrong" way since it's basically just an open virtual life simulator.

I haven't encountered this and I'm sorry you have. I don't think there's a right or wrong way to place the game either. I personally really like working on my town but I'm not as intense about it as some people are. You should just tell your friends what you've told us and explain how the game works.

About the Roost though, aren't there rumours that it might return? I've heard those and I hope they're true because I really miss it. It's going to mess up my town planning if it doesn't get released soon but at least moving things around is easier in NH.

AC is a game for everyone and caters to the individual. I haven't got to dream yet and my island is still under construction but thats because of how I play under my own terms. Why should it matter if you decorate or terraform? Some people like the undeveloped, wild look. I mean, the theme is "deserted island"....so just play how you want to play and just ignore them.

There are some spots on my island I'm planning on keeping wild or at least making them look natural precisely because it fits the game's theme.

Why do your friends care so much about an island that isn't theirs? Seems like they need a new priority in their life. Sorry you're getting picked on.

I haven't dealt with any of that... but mainly because the first thing I focused on was decorating my island, lol. I've also played all the previous games except PC (population growing is... the GC one, right?) so, when I first started playing this one, the first thing I wanted to focus on was the NEWEST aspects! But, I know lots of people are perfectly content with not decorating their islands. While I simply couldn't resist decorating mine, I respect everyone has the right to play however they want. That's part of the beauty of these games! Even if you literally just want to run in circles all day, if that's how you wanna play, go for it! Who cares?

I mean, I've certainly faced my fair share of judgment for TTing- which I find utterly stupid. Like, I remember browsing custom designs online and there were multiple anti-time travelling signs. Like... why? Is it a reminder to yourself? Or just to make guests uncomfortable? I also remember reading an article that was ADAMANT TTing was completely antithetical to the whole point of the game and will absolutely destroy your love of the game if you do it. Umm... says you? I've been TTing since the first game. It's a big part of the enjoyment for me. Frankly, it was frustrating enough that Nintendo themselves seems to be actively working against TTers in this game (with limiting events and holidays, despite TTing being possible in every single game so far). I don't need people telling me I won't enjoy the game if I do it. I enjoy the game plenty, thanks. Right now I'm in November, collecting mushrooms, and having a blast while doing it.

Honestly, I think some people work out their insecurities through critiquing how other people play the game. Some people get uppity about TTing because TTers will naturally be "ahead" of them (despite this being literally the exact opposite of a competitive game) and thus think they shouldn't be allowed to do it because it'll "ruin" the game for those who don't. Seriously, some people literally say that. And it's absurd. If they don't believe in TTing or whatever, then they should take comfort in knowing they're playing the game more "ethically" or whatever even if I'm "ahead". The fact that they're jealous seems to imply they know how absurd it their stance is (NOTE- I am NOT talking about all people who don't TT, ONLY the ones who judge and berate those who do- if you don't want to TT, that's cool! Play how you wanna play! I won't judge you, and all I ask for is the same respect)
Similarly, it seems your friends may be feeling insecure about their own islands. Some people see how other people decorate theirs online and feel competitive about it. So seeing someone who DOESN'T spend any time decorating outside on their island? It may make them feel ever more insecure... because now they're literally insecure about being insecure because they're faced with the fact that not EVERYONE obsesses about the outside of their islands like they've been. So they may be hoping to rope you into the whole "must have a perfectly decorated island" camp in order to feel better about their own choices. Of course, it may not be so deep. But I think a lot of the reason people judge why others play is insecurity.

I mean, if you feel secure in your play style, why would you care how someone else plays? I feel confident that I'm playing the best way I can for my own enjoyment. Therefore, I really don't care about how anyone else plays. I get annoyed when they actively judge others (If people talk about how THEY don't like to TT, that's cool. If people tell me why I shouldn't TT- nuh uh. Not cool.) and if someone is actively cheating or trying to hurt others, then that's unacceptable. But otherwise my attitude is- you do you. Play how you wanna play, have fun, and don't let anyone tell you you're playing wrong!
Anyway... congrats if you read this whole post, it ended up being way more rambly than I expected 😝

Just play it how you want to play it. My island is only half decorated and my house only half done. I've also haven't got all the villagers I want yet (I'm happy with 8 of them but in no hurry to replace the other two). I'm just taking it at my own pace. I'm sorry some of your friends are being judgmental about the way you're playing.

You need to play how you want to play if you pushed yourself to play how others want, you're going to get burned out and not enjoy the game. Your friends need to realize that there is no right or wrong way to play, except maybe judging or criticizing others.

I feel that a lot of first timers to the series see New Horizons as a design game, not knowing how traditional animal crossing games were played. I'd start by not caring what other people think, I've seen far too many people feel pressured to ensure their islands are perfect and 'instagram ready'. The game can be played in whatever way you want, if you want to focus on the traditional style, then that's what you should do. I'm sick of people policing others and making others feel bad about their islands, it's unfortunately a consequence of the game 'blowing up'

My friends (who for them this is their first animal crossing game) keep asking to see a dream address. And I just tell them I don't have one since my island is still half empty and we leave it at that lol. Just play how you wanna play and if your friends keep heckling you just tell them you're too busy to decorate your island or something haha

I mean the game hasn't even been out a year and there's no rush to do anything. I do feel like this time round with the like youtube island walkthroughs some people are treating acnh like a competition for who can decorate their town the fastest.

Like I have a full time job I ain't got time spending hours decorating every day lol. Plus nintendos continuously releasing new items and features, so proctastinating on your island might actually be to your advantage in the long run (like when they added shrubs and ppl with finished towns replaced fences with them)
