Hey there TBT! I just got back from my family's two-week vacation, where I went to Austria and Germany, with a day in Switzerland, passing through France and Liechtenstein. I'm dead tired, as I get used to the 6 hour time change.
I'll post a basic summary of what I saw, and can remember right now...I'll update if anyone's intrested, and when I'm less tired. Lots of castles and mountains. Amazing scenery.
Expect incoherant walls of text and random thought jumps.
I know basically no German, having learned some words from Princess Tutu (Schwannsee = Swan Lake), and from Apollo Justice! (Achtung = Caution)
SUMMARY
Flew into Frankfurt Airport, rented a car, drove to Vienna. Went to a few museums, but the real fun was at the Opera House. Both nights we were there, we bought cheap seats to the performances. Three Euros gets you into standing room, which, if you go early, gets you standing right behind people who paid 100 Euros for their seats. Best. Deal. Ever. Saw one random ballet, and an opera "La Forza Del Destino". (The best part = a guy singing about how he wanted his friend to live, then discovered that he was the guy he wanted revenge on, and then wanted him to live so that he could kill him) Very awesome. Singing and ballet are amazing.
Went to a smaller town called Rothenburg. (I think). Old walled medieval town, the best one still in existence. I'm pretty darn sure that the town in Princess Tutu was inspired by this, so I had lots of fun here.
Saw Naruto in German, laughed at the opening theme. Lots of censoring; I caught the two Tsukiyomi episodes, so Kakashi getting stabbed on a stone slab was completely edited, as was the slaying of the Uchiha clan. Also saw Avatar. Acting wasn't as good, but as I could quote the episode (The Headband) almost completely from memory, it was fun. I saw some in French later in the trip. Why do they show Avatar more in foreign countries than here? Weird...
.....I'm drawing a blank, (Jet Lag) so onto the next thing that I remember!
Stayed most of the trip in Austria, I think Salzburg was next. Home of the Sound of Music!
But not when we were there! It was being taken over by Euro 2008 fans, the big soccer event of Europe. Sweden and Greece were playing later in the day, and it was incredibly fun to see the streets swamped with crazy nationalistic fans. We hung out at the Sweden Fan Zone for a while, where people w/0 tickets could watch the game on a HUGE TV. Lots of blue and yellow; I won myself a neat hat playing some sort of soccer-ball bazooka game.
Best Part: Seeing a bunch of crazed Swedish soccer fans enthusiastically singing "Country Roads" in Salzburg. A song about West Virginia, sung by Swedes, in Austria. Awesome.
Went to a small town in Austria, Obertraun, went to the surrounding area. Absolutely beautiful, with mountains everywhere. I often wondered what my life would be like had I grown up there in the country; I probably wouldn't be posting here.
My favorite part was a lake so still, it looked like a mirror of the surrounding trees and mountain.
Skipping around more... a lot more...
Heard of "Mad" King Ludwig? He was a constitutional monarch who spent tons of money building fairytale castles, and then was declared insane, because they wanted to get rid of him. He was eccentric, but not crazy. Built awe-inspiring castles, including NeuSchwannstein, which the Cinderella Castle was directly inspired by.
...Yeah, I'm done for today. I'll hold out a little while longer, and then I'm going to bed.
