i haven't really picked up ACNL in a few months, i just lost the motivation. now, however, i want to pick it back up and start with a new/fresh town. are there any tricks to staying in it for the long term? i always seem to only manage to play for a month or so at a time before abandoning it again :(

make goals and landscape? if you're bored with your map or villagers maybe you should reset

I feel the same way. Make some goals for yourself, like 'I'm aiming for two dreamies' or 'I need --- shop' or landscape. But definitely reset.

Like the above users said set a few goals up for yourself. If you get bored on your mayor maybe instead of dropping the game or resetting again make another character and work on upgrading their house and working on developing friendships as them. Try and make a friend who plays the game (sure you could find one on here) and maybe have competitions to see who can do stuff quicker. For example race to see who will get Kicks first and so on. Just a few ideas ^^

I felt the same as you so I just restarted my town today completely from scratch. I think that combined with what the other users have said about setting goals and such will make the game feel fresh and exciting. Also if you're like me and you time travelled a lot in your last town, why don't you make a deal with yourself not to do it this time around?

Like others said make goals for yourself. It also helps to keep coming to this forum, I find that reading about the game here keeps me into it. Also, visit dream towns. After seeing those amazing towns, you'll work harder to make your own town beautiful. I was an on and off player before and all of these helped me to play everyday day since I made my town in February.

Do not time travel! (My only exception to this is if you're playing late at night and nothing is open, but I never time travel past a few hours)
Make goals; my current one is to make my town absolutely beautiful and it'll probably take me months to achieve that!
Go for dream villagers but don't buy them, let your villagers cycle through naturally and see what you get!
Decide on a theme for your town, maybe? And go with that and try to decorate your town around it, including your PWP's.
Work on collecting every fish/bug for each season to fill up your museum!

For me I got most of my dreamies and I just never want them to leave. Also I've been decorating my town and am not done yet. Plus I still need a couple more dreamies. I just find new things to do each day. I've been redecorating my house lately and having to order and customize items, I have a cycling town as well so I have to check that and do that everyday. I visit dream towns a lot. I'm still working on my museum and catching all the things. I find ways to motivate myself. Being on the forums has helped me a lot too cause I can link up with others to help them with things or get things from them or whatever it may be. NL has been my most intensively played AC in the series probably since the gamecube, and even the gamecube version I didn't put as much effort into. I just like this version a lot, though I've been thinking of revisiting my old towns on gamecube and wii. I've long since lost WW. Don't know what happened to it.

Try to be a completionist- there's tons of things to collect, like the catalogue and things for the museum. Work on making your house exactly the way you want it. Don't TT too much so everything progresses more slowly... if you want you can try to make your town 'themed', which would take quite a bit of work and might keep you interested! If you get into the habit of playing with lots of other people, I've found it makes the game more enganging and addicting.
