Although I was nearly 2 years ago, I've only just noticed. Last week I bought a pokemon for the ds and animal crossing: let's go to the city, I couldn't use online wifi for any, I checked on city folk and then found out! :'( I feel like I've wasted my money!

Post anything to do with this topic below~
Tbh, I tjink the wii speak buyers wasted most; the game cannot function without Nintendo wifi!
This post was sooo random. Does it fit in?

This is something Nintendo does. I never paid much attention to it, because I rarely play online. But yeah. Is kinda messed up.

How hard is it to keep the online functionality up, Nintendo?

It costs money. And it's to make people consider buying a 3DS or Wii U. It's really all just money. That's why the eShop is still up but the game servers aren't.

Actually they didn't do it for more wii u and 3DS sales, they shut down because they ran out on a contract and the company that ran the servers ( gamespy ) was shutting down.

This is something all three main console manufacturers do (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft). The original Xbox had online functionality canned and I'm pretty sure that whatever service PS2 used will have been long since shut down as well. Not to mention individual games on those systems that turned their servers off whilst the console was still relevant (though there's not many of those).

It's not hard to keep servers up, but it is a total waste of money if not enough people are using them, especially on an outdated system they're hoping to phase out.

Though, Nintendo should probably keep them up way longer than they have done. I'm pretty certain the original Xbox servers only got shut down about 3 years ago (it was apparently a big deal because a surprisingly significant amount of people still played Halo 2 online), which is a damn long time compared to how long it took Nintendo to pull support for Wii/DS.

I'm not so sure, but if you have any Best Buy, EB Games, or GameStop stores near you they can trade in those games for you.

PlayStation 2 never actually used online service.

It's their way of "encouraging" people to buy their new products and it is infinitely annoying.

I don't know how PS2 online worked, I just know it existed. I just assume if they had dedicated servers, they would be down by now along with the original Xbox.

There is some hack for the Wii that lets you play games online. It is called Wiimfi, just look it up if you are interested!

Yeah, the Wii and DS definitely got cut off a bit short and it does make me worry about whether the same could happen to the Wii U/3DS earlier than it should.

But as someone else pointed out already here, the Wii/DS online's backbone was actually run by Gamespy which shut down at the same time. So they would have had to transition everything over to their own systems to keep it going. It's fair to say that would be more effort than one can reasonably expect a company to do for an already legacy service. I'd like to believe that they would have kept it going for a few more years if it weren't for the Gamespy connection.

given they seem to keep rereleasing the 3ds, it probably wont be a problem for a few years

it's a shame that wifi got shut down for the wii and the ds. i didn't get much of a chance to play online on those systems because i first got an internet connection thing only a few months before wifi for the two systems got shut down. playing mario kart wii online was loads of fun while it was still up.

though i can see why nintendo did it, seeing as the 3ds and the wii u had been out for a little while (well maybe not the wii u but definitely the 3ds) so less and less people were playing online on the ds and wii (plus the ds and wii are getting pretty old). it would have been pretty pointless for nintendo to keep paying money to keep something going if not many people were using it anymore.
