Yes, I unretired just for a second to share some wisdom if you don't mind.

Today, I was going through maps and I realized that you got to go IN the town itself to get a feel of it and see if it's going to work. You can't get a feel of a map just by looking at a 2D image of it.

Looks like too much river and not enough land right?
Wrong! In fact, that map above has more room for PwPs than this map here

So, next time, go in the town itself when you find a map you think you will like. Don't make the mistakes I made by passing up maps you think you like just because of it's 2D image. You never know, the map with the million ponds might actually be the one you will stick with for years.

I have to agree.
I just restarted my town (again) because of this reason.
The map looked PERFECT at the beginning but after a week it felt full and there were no available spaces for PWP's.
Sometimes you just gotta choose a map [even if you don't like it] and roll with it to challenge yourself.

The bottom river has it flowing in all four directions? lol I didn't really choose my map carefully. I just restarted until I got cherries. I'm pretty happy with it though, I don't think there are maps out there that I would just absolutely hate...

Eh, I agree with both. I think ultimately you have to go into the map to get a feel of it to know for sure it'll work. However, that said, the look of the map matters to me as I just have a general preference...so I'm going to bypass most of them as for me I need both aspects to be content. Unfortunately, I did this with my two later towns I got and love their maps. My first which is also my main town...I didn't have the forethought to reset for better selections so I chose the best out of what was given the first time. Can't say I love the map knowing the other two possibilities I love but I have too much invested in it to reset it. Plus, I love that it's from 2013 when I got the first cartridge.

Yeah, but really you don't know what you have to work with until all your villagers are moved in. At least, that's been my experience.

I sort of do both with being picky about the map and then going in to look at it before deciding for sure. There are lots of things you can figure out the placement of from just the map, like permanent rock locations, etc. So I have map features I know I want in mind when I look at the maps before picking one to check out in person, so to speak c:
I'm not sure I would have thought that first map had more room than the second, though, so going in to see is a really good thing to keep in mind and do.

I'm good at picking maps visually, but I always go in, because one thing the maps don't indicate is where the rocks are... There have been points for me when rocks just ruin everything.

I completely agree with you. It's hard to imagine what a map will look like just from an image. The game is pretty good at deceiving you. So many maps look bigger than they are, and it usually isn't all that big. I usually choose maps based how it looks on size rather than river shape and the placement of important buildings since I want as much space as possible. I do always go into the town though, to make sure they have the right amount of space I need. When I first started the game I knew it was possible to map reset, but I still chose out of the maps given to me as this was going to be my first "proper town". Didn't keep it for all the long tbh. I'm also good at being able to tell where rocks are going to be.

I really wish that it would show on the map display what the town fruit is(or let us choose). I never thought to go into the town and check it out first but if I did it would be my luck I'd want to change the map but there would a villager(s) that I really want and would keep it for that reason.
