I do my best not to buy new things for as long as possible (to the point where my old stuff is falling apart), but I doubt that really helps much.

It may not help as much as one would hope but I'd argue it helps a good amount. Imagine using the same phone for 6 years compared to buying a new one every year? Imagine if everyone did that? Imagine how many less phones would need to be made. Just an example. One person helping is better than nobody.

Yeah, you’re totally right, Corrie. I don’t know why I included that in my post. The phone thing is actually something I do (my last phone I had for four years and it was, quite literally, falling apart on the back with scratches on the front). Maybe I just said it because I want to help more. But yes, you are correct. ^^

You aren't wrong for saying that! It's easy to get discouraged when you think you're only one person doing anything. Every single person helps!! Keep doing what you're doing! Trust me, I'd love to do more for things I'm passionate about changing too. It's hard when government or large companies are involved. What I've been doing is "speaking with my wallet." Companies won't listen until they start hurting in sales. That's something I think everyone needs to realize if they don't already.

Unfortunately this is something that pervades almost every facet of our lives. For the average person, the clothes they wear, food they eat, technology that they own are all likely to have been made by an underpaid (and sometimes underage) labourer in an Asian sweatshop.

This is a topic that no one really likes to talk about, but the more it's discussed the closer we can move to a solution. Unfortunately consumer scapegoatism and 'greenwashing' is a huge thing and it really should be about making large corporations accountable for their immoral actions than making consumers change their lifestyles. While I fully support and also take part in boycotting companies that abuse slave labour, systemic change is what we really need.
