you could try gifting her other items until she rotates it out of her wardrobe in hopes that she'll give it back to you. it's mostly a matter of luck though, and she might end up displaying it in her house which would probably end up being a total headache to try and recover. best case scenario is to hold out hope that she gives it back though i think

Just gift her hats and check the recycling bin. My villagers have thrown stuff out there before, I'm pretty sure.

I gave Whitney, for example, a white rose rug.. she never placed it, and magically a few days later (I dont check recycling every day so maybe sooner) there it was, in the bin...
