You are just getting mixed up with the lazy people and rounding them into the English.
Sure, there are some that do this "ah" thing you're talking about. However, there are people that talk correctly.
Further more, you don't seem to realise that eventhough England is small, it too has several different accents within it. So that too can go into your quaint ideal of how us Brits, as a whole, talk.

Then TV...and media...has done a terrible job of depicting the accents then. So you must mean, Andy, it's just like something like a New Joisy or southern accent here in America? Like only a small percentage of the people talk that way? Not 80% of the people you come across?

Of course the media does a bad job of showing how things really are.
There is a change depending on where it is you go.
But yes, much like America has it's differating accents, here does too. Much like there would be anywhere.

British people hear American accents as nasally and boring.

American accents are boring, unless you've got a dialect, like Redneck or New Joisy.

But then again, those can just be annoying.

But "Proper English", like I pointed out, would be pronounced that way. Then again, English did come from, no other than, the English.

Then where did the need for the unnecessary "a" shortening of "er" words come from?

Like "numba". It's obviously spelled number, er, urrr...

But I guess that's just propa English.
