What's the trick? I bought a painting, it looked the most real of all the artworks (all of them looked fake, tbh), but it turned out to be fake. Is there a trick to tell what's real and what isn't?

Tbh look up a guide or just really know your art. Some statues have very obviously wrong modern things on them (watches, necklaces, different colors) but some paintings have diffrences so subtle that even recognizing the painting you can miss the details.

Also there is the possability that ALL your Redd art could be fake for his trip, which sucks :/

I use a guide to tell what's real and what's fake. also knowing your art has perks. there's really no trick to it. you either know the difference from your knowledge or use a guide.

Ok, cheers guys. I thought all of the artworks looked fake, so maybe they were, but judging from the guide posted, I could easily have been fooled as well. Thanks, all! :)

Abdallahsmash on YouTube has a really great video where he goes over every piece of art and shows the differences between the reals and fakes. I found it very helpful

OOh, pro tip! Thanks. :) Posting it here for future reference.

Can't believe he's gotten all of that so fast, even with time travel! People don't sleep, or what? 😅

There’s also option C, which is looking up the original image and comparing from there. You don’t need to be an art history expert—I just tested it by putting in basic descriptions of what Redd had on offer:

• statue woman arms missing
• painting boy blue clothes
• painting vegetable man
and my favorite
• painting blue yellow swirls

All of these immediately led to the real artwork. I don’t judge anybody for using a guide, but you are missing a fun part of the game imo. To me it’s very fun, at least.

I enjoy doing that. It's funny cause when Redd came to my island yesterday, I immediately knew all the 4 paintings were fake because I either knew the originals or because I already had been exposed to then in NL so I had a vague memory of how they looked like.

Also, today I took my 3ds to play NL, and Redd was there. Funny enough, I knew which one was real by the process of elimination: Mona Lisa was easy to spot as a fake, the Egyptian bust was also fairly easy to discern from the original; the fake version of the famous paining of a woman with an animal on her arms is laughably easy to pass on, as the cat she's holding is comically drawn.

I use this AMAZING doc that someone compiled. It's really clear AND shows you the real and fake:

Yeah, this is what I did when Redd came yesterday. We could tell for 2 out of the 4 that they were fake because of knowing how the real thing is supposed to look, but the others we weren't sure. We just Googled the real life artwork to compare.

That's honestly probably what Nintendo intends for you to do. It's kind of a little bit of art appreciation.

Honestly, the ship was so dark I couldn't see a thing. Not even with reading glasses.
I had to take a screenshot and zoom in and I could still barely make anything out.

Why, nintendo!
You did this with the fossil displays too.

We need something powered by NASA to see that stuff, amirite?

I think they should use the real name of the paintings/sculptures. I guess they don't use them to avoid mislabeling - like, calling a forgery by the name of the original piece - but in all honesty, that would make even more sense because that's exactly what Redd is trying to do.

Did you know you can zoom in the game? Serious question in case you missed the ability.

So far, I don’t want a guide to answer it for me. I want to check the real art and try to tell. My first time out, I failed.

I agree—though I’ll admit to kinda getting a kick out of seeing what bizarre, simple description I can type into Google while still get linked to the real art. For example, I was actually stumped for a moment what to search with the scary painting, but as soon as I started typing out “painting angry m” it suggested “Japanese painting angry man” and gave me the result xD

It might be. I definitely feel like I’m getting a lot out of it—both in terms of fun and learning something. I’ve seen the majority of the pieces before, but I’m not familiar enough with most to know their names. Now I do though, and that’s really cool.
