How to stop my villagers from selling/buying at Retail?

I want to preserve my villagers' houses, but they won't stop losing furniture by trying to sell them at Retail. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening?

Put random crap for sale in every space at 999,999 bells.

Just put up something at an overly high price, I have peaches in my retail for 7000 that puts them off
