I would really like to start a cycling town.... but I'm wondering what you need to do it...

do you need a second copy of the game? a different memory card? a second 3ds? please help because I'm curious to know!

I currently only have one of each thing above lol

Well you definitely need a second game. Unless you're just gonna restart your main town, then having a second game would be unnecessary. If you currently have a digital copy, you can only get a physical copy in order to even have a second town. If you have a physical copy now, well you're all set to buy whichever version you want. Although I'd probably recommend another physical copy since they have sales and mark down prices in stores or on ebay/amazon/etc because it's an older game.

You don't really need a second memory card since that doesn't really go into the process, except when you don't have enough room for both games. It's usually recommended that you don't play and switch SD cards though because of corruption and you might not remember the date when you played one game verses the other. Just complications all around really lol

You can have two towns on one 3ds, so unless you're willing to bring out the big bucks to buy another system, it's not really necessary either. My friend, when she used to play, had two games one on her old 3ds and another on her 3ds xl, so if you have that kind of set up then you're pretty much golden.

To start a cycle town, just get another game/reset your old game. Make a new town and start moving those villagers. I think you need to get 100% rating and everything first before villagers will move out though, I'm not sure on this but I think it's safe to say that you need to just play normally for maybe about a week. Let some new villagers move in and such, and then start the cycling process.

Here's are some pretty good guides.

Remember though that if you do have cycle purely for one town and don't want it to influence the other, TT via the in-game clock and not the 3ds clock. (This is also assuming that you'd only have one 3ds)

ok thank you so much!! all this was really helpful.... so I just need a second copy of the game? that doesnt seem too bad... and if it required a 2nd 3ds I woulda dropped this.... and I don't mess with 3ds clock anyway so were good

Great information from Snowblizzard.

The only inconvenience of not having a second 3DS is that you can't transfer villagers between your own towns. If you are cycling purely to offer villagers to others, then that is not a problem.

Getting 100% approval isn't required, but it is nice to have if you want to build a campsite, a second bridge or turn on the beautiful town ordinance. I wanted to build a second bridge in my cycling towns to make it easier/faster to get to wherever the villagers live when people come to adopt them. I didn't build a campsite as I don't have the patience for the time required to convince some of the villagers to move in.

That first link provided - to the Foolproof Cycling Method - is the method I use (the second option). Works like a charm.

If you turn on beautiful town, then you end up with loads of flowers and you could always breed hybrids for selling. If you don't turn on that ordinance, then you end up with loads of weeds and you can invite people over for weeding events.

Some very good information peeps. I have 2 3ds' and 3 copies of the game and I have been thinking of starting a Cycling/Hybrid production town myself. So thank you for all the tips.

Awesome, solid info from snowblizzard24 & RainyInVancouver !!

Additional bit of info which is important (to me anyways):

- change those ugly shirts in Able Sis as soon as possible.
Just choose to display generic designs in umbrellas, so no more of those 'Anytown' designs on any villagers.

- fill all 8 Re-Tail flea market displays with flowers/native fruits etc, priced them at max, so villagers can't put up their stuff there.

- prepared a good amount of bells to be transferred to your cycle town, so that you can build at least one more bridge to make running around easier.

Have fun!

You definitely need a second copy of the game. If you have a digital copy, by the way, I think your second copy needs to be a physical cartridge because you can only have one digital copy of the game per 3DS.

You don't really need another memory card unless you don't have any space on your current one. You can just switch cartridges and it'll be fine.

You may or may not need a second 3DS, depending on what you want to do. If you want to move villagers and items from your cycling town to your main one, it's going to be a lot easier if you have two 3DS. On the other hand, you could always get someone to hold the villagers you want to move across, so unless you're very invested in ACNL or if the waiting time is a problem for you, there's no need to do it.

I don't have a cycling town, but I don't think you'd need to do much since you don't really need to decorate it or make it look nice in any way. It might be a good idea to have the campsite so you can invite villagers more easily. When you choose a map, the starting villagers will probably matter more, but it might be a good idea to have a map where the Re-Tail is easy to access (or to build things like bridges if not), if you're planning on charging or getting tips. That way, you can fill your Re-Tail with overpriced fruit and shells that other people can buy. The money will be sent straight into your ABD account the next day and it saves a lot of trouble on picking up and counting money bags. Doing that will also keep villagers from filling Re-Tail with their own items. Don't answer any requests, since some people like original villagers and otherwise their houses can end up full of bugs and fish. I think that if you change the Able Sisters designs to umbrellas, villagers won't change their shirts to those designs.

If you want to grow hybrids, you'll want to have the Beautiful Town ordinance. That will keep your flowers from wilting while you're time travelling.

I can also share the method I use for moving villagers out if you're interested. It's pretty safe and quick, and it's the one I use in my town (which isn't a cycling one so losing a villager matters more).
