Some advice, villagers will always give you a return gift if you give them something with a sell value of 2000 bells or more. Most buyable furnitures sell for only a fraction of their buy price, so only the super expensive ones will have a high enough sell value. However, any crafted furniture sells for 2x the sell value of its raw materials, so if you craft something with well priced ingredients you'll always get a return gift! Anything that uses 3 or more iron, 10 or more clay, 10 or more fruit, 14 or more stone, or 17 or more wood fits this criteria, as do most of the shell furniture items.
