how to make villagers wear their original clothes?

they just keep wearing the default designs. do i have to buy their original clothes and send it to them? i'm afraid that if i do that, they'll display it instead of wearing it. and how do i prevent them from changing to the default designs?

Change the designs in Able to umbrellas, then yeah, I think you will have to take the risk of sending it to them or having some clothes in your pockets in the hope they'll ping you to buy them

First, set all designs in ables to umbrellas like the above user said.

From here you can keep their clothing on hand until they ask for it or send it to them in the mail. I usually set my game clock to a little before 5PM and then send them the clothing. After you just go find them and see if they are wearing it and if they are not you can just reset.

you can also give them clothes on their birthdays that they'll wear

Send them 1 at a time and then check their room to see whether they've placed it or not.

Even if they do appear in their rooms it's not like you can't just send them some furniture so they can replace the clothing.

Mail arrives at 5pm so if you set your game to a little before 5pm they will get it as soon as it reaches that time. They will have either put the outfit on or in their house in most cases. OR you can just send them 4-5 of the same shirt at once and I'm pretty sure they will change into it. The problem with this is that they may also put 1 in their house.

Pete delivers mail at 5 p.m. too. So go to like 4:57 p.m. Have 2-5 letters with same original shirts attatched. (i always send 2 shirts at a time and works pretty well) Send those letters and save and quit before it hits 5 p.m.
After 3-4 minutes reload your game and walk around, check if the villager changed his or her shirt. If they didn't, just exit out the game and repeat. When they are changed then you can save. c:
