Yes island, sorry I didn't mention where. I know but I cut down all palm trees but 2 because apparently it would make bug catching easier but now I can only catch about 2 bugs every 5 minutes so I've replanted the trees. However when I had all the palm trees it was still difficult to catch bugs. so what's the easiest way?

the more palm trees you have to higher your changes that bugs will spawn! also look for fins in the water and catch sharks! they can be worth from 5,000 to 15,000 bells each!
Dig up all the hibiscus bushes, cut down all the trees that are not bananas/coconuts, and dig up the stumps. From there on, you'll just have to run around the island and see if a beetle spawns on the palm trees. Keep in mind that the wharf roaches, tiger beetles and hermit crabs will also spawn, so you should chase those away, too.
I like to have 2~4 palm trees spread out on the island and go after 7pm. Be sure to get rid of the bushes and flowers too to stop butterflies from spawning. All you have to do is go back and forth between your palm trees and scare any trash bugs away (wharf roach, tiger beetle and hermit crab).
Scare off the lesser bugs, roaches, tiger beetles, butterflies, or catch and release them for they are cheap and worthless, but they limit the amount of better bugs, because only so many can spawn at once. Pull your shells and sell them to Leilani, she doesn't pay much but it gets them off the beach and then you'll be able to see the hermit crab shells to scare them off too.
I usually have around 6-8 palm trees on my beach none in the front, just on the left and right sides of the island, and spaces out enough and in a curved manner so you can see the trunk of each by standing in front of the island. Don't put them too close to the front either leave space to walk between each tree with extra because if you catch a bug on one tree you might scare the next one.
More expensive bugs scare easier, so if you stand at the front of the row and let's say there is a goliath beetle on the first tree and a golden stag on the second tree, skip the goliath, because if you catch the goliath the net will scare off the golden behind it.
For my technique I usually start at the front of the island on the beach, look down the row of trees, walk north next to the trees catching what is there and also scaring off lesser bugs, then crossing from the back tree of one side across the raised land in the middle, to get to the most southern tree at the front of the island on the other side, so diagonally. It's easier to see and catch the bugs going south to north so continue this pattern basically making a big sideways 8, this has made me lots of bells. I also usually keep one or two of the middle trees as well, because they do occasionally spawn giant stags and rainbow stags which fetch a good price.
My method is a little confusing but it works for me and like I said, it has gotten me lots and lots of bells.
