The more you spend on the Nookling store the more upgrades you'll unlock. The first happens when you have spent 12,000 bells or bought 15 items from the Nookling Junction. Doing so you'll unlock T&T Mart, with more furniture. There's more upgrades, so I suggest reading this:

basically i just buy everything in the nookling stores, and if i don't like it i sell it back to re-tail. that means that it's way faster for you to unlock upgrades bc they are based on the amount of bells you spend.
also doing errands for your villagers, because often they give you furniture as a reward. you only need to hold it in your inventory for it to be added to your catalogue, so it's a pretty easy way to build up your furniture options.

Well, there are hundreds (or even thousands) of items in the game, so don't worry. You'll eventually find something you like.
this site actually has all of the items, so you can take a look at them. You could also buy items here on the boards from other members.
As for getting those items in the game, it depends. But more items appear each day if you have bigger store upgrades.

I just bought everything from the shops, I like having a decent sized catalogue and I've almost completed it now
If you're looking for specific furniture; you're best going to the retail section on this site and asking if anybody has them for sale

What really helped me was streetpassing! 
You can order things from the HHA showcase houses of the people you streetpass. If you, like me, live in an area where streetpass is nearly impossible I suggest bringing your 3DS if you go to a large event like a convention! You only need to fill up your showcase once to have a large amount of furniture to choose from.
