Pokémon How to evolve Vulpix into Ninetales...?

I've been having some trouble evolving my level 52 male Vulpix.
First I gave him a fire stone, traded with a pokemon from my friend's Y copy.
I did some battles, but still no evolution screen popped up.
I then switched to a red shard, battled, but no screen.
My friend had no problem evolving her Vulpix into a beautiful ;-; Ninetales!
He is on 5 hearts in pokemon Amie. I have no idea anymore

It doesn't have to hold it. Instead, you select the Fire Stone in your bag, and select "Use", then Vulpix. It'll evolve right away.

its as Reindeer said, you use the item like a potion or etc (outside of battle, of course)

Same applies to all Pokemon that evolve through stones (except that oval stone/whatever it was evolution). All other item evolutions require the item to be held.

No the everstone stops them evolving. She meant the oval stone which is used to evolve Chansey or Happiny or whatever.

I guess I was right with oval stone then. And yeah it evolves happiny but it has to hold it, it is the only evolution item that does that I think except for the trade-required evolutions.
