I had 1500 medals from doing the Elite Scavenger Tour so many times, and I'm down to 100 again from buying 4 of every item I didn't have on the international island (for all four of my characters). It took only a like a few hours to spend it all xD I'm terrible at saving medals and bells in this game.

I farmed a lot of medals whilst playing with a couple of friends only to spend them all on bush starts 2 minutes later. I'm ridiculous when it comes to starts tho, I need to get it in case I might want it in the future.

I do that too xD When I see red hibiscus starts, I have to buy 10 at the very least, even if I don't have plans for them yet.

I farmed pretty often with some animal crossing friends awhile back and I never really use my metals lol so probably not very often. It would be nice to be able to give them away though cx

You can always just buy things for people that don't have enough medals, if you're feeling generous :3

I only farm them when there's a good tour + an item that I wanna buy. Which is usually always because I want most of the island items.

All three players in my main town completed the gold tour badges. Mayor has 20 and the other two players have 2,000 plus.
My guest town mayor has 1,600K and the other two mayor have 400 medals. I've bought all the items for the towns but still pick up rare items like the silver axe, sandcastle or the flip flops for other players.

The guest mayor needs 1,200K for gold.
When a player with a low medal count finds something at CT I start up the town with all the medals. She drops by and buys the items and leave. Most of the time I'm just by myself and she arrives on the same island. A few times I've had another player there and they get confused. Not sure how I can play two players at the same time.

Wow that's a lot of medals! The most I ever got was 500. I've pretty much got every island item I wanted thanks to trading on here so I don't bother now. When I used to I would spend them straight away on several bushes or several of a rarer item I hadn't seen before

Wow, you guys are good at earning medals!!:D:D
I currently have 0 as there is not really anything I wanted to buy from the island,
Except for the mermaid series.
I in,t try to earn medals when they have mermaid furnitures that I don't already have on sale.
I'll earn 40 medals, buy the furniture I wanted, and that's it, back to 0.

I usually only farm for medals when there is something I want in the shop, and so I only really earn what I need to buy what I want. So i spend them immediately after making them. The most I spent in 1 trip was when I bought like a box's worth of red hibiscus starts...

This made me laugh! Yes it would have confused me!
Hadn't thought of doing that, & I have several towns. But I find CT so stressful that I haven't been for well over a year now.

The game I'm currently playing, I've got the mayor to just over 1000 medals, in prep to going to CT islands, but am so reluctant to go.
I love the Giant dragonfly tour, albeit you can't shorten it. (I collect fruit if I have time).
Elite scavenger is good but my memory is such I have to write the 3 items down before I start it, & I'd rather just sit & play rather than have pen & paper on my lap as well.

I have bell boom on, means items on my island cost 20% more in medals - eg something costing 40 medals costs me 48. But you don't earn 20% more on the tours - Giant Dragonfly still gets me 20. I put up with it as I do like bell boom, will take it off eventually.

I think (so long since I've been) that items on CT islands may also cost me 20% more - can't remember.

I've tried doing tours on my own island with a character from another of my towns (if you have a visitor you get rid of the CT membership and get another item in its stead) but I found I couldn't cope playing both characters even on the simpler tours - I need to practice.

Most I've had is about 120 because I was buying mermaid furniture at the time. I haven't really been back to the island except to gather flowers.
If I'm not buying furniture then I am definitely stocking up on either silver axes or bush starts.
