How many villagers have you had in total?

I'm changing my play style from New Leaf in this game where I want to cycle out villagers, even ones I really like, to experience as much as I can. Ideally i want their framed photos before they leave the island but in some circumstances like getting an awesome campsite villager and replacing a villager I'm not always successful in having their picture first.

Former residents (no particular order): Pashmina, Friga, Paula, Pierce, Celia, Felicity, Dobie, Leopold, Bunnie, Sherb.
Current residents: Mint, Tangy, Marina, Ursala, Quillson, Opal, Marcel, Stitches, Merengue, Tammi.

I've had the game since launch day, but I have only had 5 villagers so far; my starting villagers of Snake (Jock) and Ursala (Sisterly) who I intend to replace, and the first three Nook Miles Island villagers you can adopt, Annalisa (Normal), Bella (Peppy), and Tucker (Lazy) who are intended to be permanent.

Finding Tucker on the Nook Miles Islands took actual weeks even though the potential pool of villagers at the time was limited to Lazies, and after I finally acquired him, I've just been sort of preoccupied with other things. I've been less than eager to finally set up the campsite because I frequently play with friends and make purchases of clothing, DIYs, furniture, and etc. here on the forums. As such, people are constantly coming and going, and with that comes the risk of picking up unwanted villagers from people's voids, something I have thus far prevented.

I need to set aside a few days of no online play and set up the campsite and scan in the amiibo for the remaining permanent residents I intend to adopt.

The ones who live with me currently are audie sherb francine wolfgang june felicity kabuki snake zell and bob, and megan rex ed diva poncho and pashmina have moved out, so a total of 16. Seems like that is the normal amount currently?

• Soon after Spike (happy birthday spike!!) came to my campsite and talked Elvis into moving
• Ken decided to move on and Pashmina really liked my island, so she took his house
• Then 2 things happened at the same time:
  • Savannah came to my island and asked to stay. And sylvia was already thinking of leaving so she took her house
  • That same day Monique said she wanted to leave. And a guy named Antonio moved in
• Tia also liked my island, and kody was moving on, so Tia moved in
• And in that some way, Flurry wanted to move and Phoebe joined the fun
• And then Savannah got tired of my teraforming shenanigans and decided to leave, and Sprinkle randomly decided that my island was fun
• (oops, forgot one) Antonio moved out because I made a really terrible choice and gave my poor villagers a feeling of abandonment. Kitt however loved feeling abandoned and moved into his place
• Not too long after Pekoe was looking for a new home. Tia actually decided that my island wasn't paradise enough so she left
• And then even phoebe went looking for an actual volcano to live in, and Audie liked my place a lot

So all in all, I think: 21

I've had around 20 live on my island so far. At first, I didn't care much about villagers, so I kind of just invited anyone. When I started to care more about villagers and make a dream list, I started kicking all my unwanted ones out. However, it is to note that I never wanted to cycle my villagers, but rather find my perfect 10 and stick with them.

I've currently reached my perfect 10 villagers, but it took a LOT of time and cycling. I think the game is built in a way that even if you're not planning on cycling villagers, you end up getting tired of some and doing it anyway. For example, I used to have Melba and Marina on my island. When they first moved in, I loved them very much. But as time passed, I got rather bored of them, and decided to let them go. They weren't bad villagers or anything, they were great! I just wasn't vibing with them anymore, you know?

Although I'm very content with my current villagers, I'm sure sooner or later I'll cycle some of them out. It's the way the game is built, and you can't fight it.

Now looking at it, my resident history is very slow. I guess I was fortunate enough to adopt so many here that I really like, and do not plan to let go. I don't imagine myself changing my current line up, except to maybe replace one of them with a cranky villager.

I think I've only had 15, as I generally let villagers move out or get replaced by campers naturally and have only TT'd out one of them (Diva). Unless I really dislike them, I generally keep my villagers until I get their pictures, so that increases how long I keep even temporary villagers.. I also have a lot of permanent ones, so it takes a lot of RNG for the ones I actually want to leave to ask to move out!

I think I've only had 12 villagers in total. The only two villagers that I can remember putting in boxes were Colton (naturally asked to move out and I wasn't a huge fan of him as a forced smug) and Teddy (a starter who I put into boxes for Flora from campsite visit). I haven't really decided what villagers I ultimately want, or even if I want a static set of ten villagers, so I haven't spent that much time fiddling with villagers moving in / out.
