how many spaces have to be free around a tree to get materials?

so I was trying to gather some bamboo today and it looks like my bamboo trees can't drop any materials while they're in this position. Theres a fence behind them and lilies between them, but considering the space in front of them is free I thought they'd still drop some bamboo. The ones at the end were able to drop bamboo in that diagonal space between the end of the fence and the white lilies.

Does anyone know how much space / which spaces around the trees have to free for them to drop materials?

You’d have to try to chop them from the other side for the materials to fall onto the path. Try getting in between the bamboo along either wall to chop them.

If you stand on your black lilies and chop then the bamboo should fall on your path! I have a similar setup on my island

this is what ended up working! This was my first time putting up a fence that close to trees but now that I know it works its opened up a world of possibilities
