How many message bottles do you get a day?

Depends, I mostly get once a day, but on occasion its twice in a day.

I'm in the "only ever seen one a day on my island" camp. I don't TT and I regularly beach comb clearing out shells throughout the day (I have a shell bed in a corner of a beach where I dump them for when I want to craft shell furniture or get a "sell ten shells" nook miles task--don't clog up my inventory or count against the five star rating, win-win-win).

But I agree with @Khaelis about the 10-20% chance of getting one on a mystery tour. That's the only time I've ever gotten a second bottle in a day. I have one character on my island.

If I recall correctly, shells don't count towards the 'clutter' counter as they are naturally occurring like stones and branches.

Exactly, I just want them off the shoreline since the rare times I get shooting stars, I want those to wash up. And it's nice to stockpile them. I've used a few as decor in the "fishing village" area of my beach, too, as if people ate clams and dropped the shells.

I have never gotten more than 1 per character. I didn't know it was possible to get more on your own island
