I haven't paid for any of my villagers, either I used the reset trick to get them via the campsite or I got them from people here on the forums

Almost all of them.

Bones and Baabara moved in naturaly at the begining of the game (I cant to save my life remember if Bones was already there at the begining or of he moved out a couple days later), Muffy and Pierce appeared on days that I reset for campsite villagers (I wasnt even looking for specific villagers! Just reseting until I liked someone enough to make them move in.) Ruby was a SUPER LUCKY case of me plot reseting on a day I knew a random villager would move in and her putting her house in a perfect place and Zell was adopted from a cylcing board here.

Ive had to trade Fauna for Fang and Merengue for Lolly though.

I started with Hamphrey, which sort of made him my dreamie since I became so attached. Maple and Flurry randomly moved in and Punchy was camping. So pretty much all of the dreamies I actually have right now were free.
