im thinking of replacing a villager, but I am scared I wont be able to find them in just one day. Any idea how long they stay open?

1 day. Unless you have more than one plot open, then only one villager will move in per day. If you want to keep the plot open, you'd have to TT back to earlier in that day to keep time going. But if you shift the actual date at all, whether it be forward or backward, the RNG will fill the plot with someone for you.

Until Nook decides to sell it without permission like a jerk. Could be as little as one day.

Edit: Took out that word cause I thought the site would censor it. Don't wanna get banned...

By one day do you mean one day where it is completely empty? Or can a villager be invited from a mystery island/randomly picked when the leaving villager is still in boxes?

The plot must be completely empty with the green Nook sign out front. You cannot invite other villagers while your villager is still in boxes.

It varies. I've had 4 days of it staying open. I don't know how long it would've taken to fill on its own, but I found a villager I wanted on day 4.

I would highly recommend trying your best to find a villager the day a plot opens up though, because every new day that starts with it being empty is just more risk of a random moving in.

When I setted a plot in the beginning for a snooty and cranky, it took one day for it to fill.
