For me, i like to lay down my paths first, then plan where my houses will be. then i tt for pwps. it usually takes me at least a month.

I don't use fake paths.
I just wore mine in over a few days, or weeks.

For me, it took quite a while to figure out how I even wanted to prep my town. I started playing New Leaf back in Christmas of 2013 and I made a town called Lovette, which was short-lived. Then I remade it as Gemini, but I didn't know what to do with it, so I remade it as Carnival, which I made into a pastel town with lots of pink and purple roses/pink and white carnations. Then when the Welcome Amiibo update happened, I sold Carnival to make a forest town called Clover, which I still have and will not touch in terms of selling it, because I put so much work into it. So you could say my prepping took a while to get right.

I'm getting a new copy in the mail shortly, and I know pretty much exactly how I want to prep my next town, which will be called Dollhaus. I have a full page of notes on how I want to decorate my house, which Amiibo cards to scan, what to bring over from Clover so my new mayor can use/wear it, etc. I have a face guide, flag QR code, town tune, and path QR codes bookmarked. Now that I've figured out how to plan out a town, it shouldn't take me long at all this time.

Town planning is my favourite part of this game. I start by cutting down all my trees and placing fake paths down to distinguish my walkways. I lay out patterns to block out PWP areas or potential resident homes. Then I plant trees around and watch the town grow. I end up doing a lot of rearranging but I usually stick to the earlier paths I created. Eventually I kick them away to reveal dirt paths because I like that look. Takes me around a month of so to fully plan it but the results come in slowly as I play

Mine has morphed as I was going, so I don't really know how long I've spent actually planning it.

I don't use paths, because I prefer the natural paths that wear. Nor do I TT, also a personal preference. I had a general idea on where I wanted major PWPs (Brewster, police station, campsite, lighthouse), and most of my initial villagers lined up nicely, so that worked out well. I also knew the general theme I was looking for, but making it come about sort of grew out from the center, rather than being a linear thing.

Looking at the entire town was overwhelming, so I focused on small areas. Once I hit upon the idea of creating "neighborhoods", it became easier. My town will be 5 years old this summer, and it's almost complete, in terms of landscaping. I've planted all the trees I want (well, no, but all the trees I can without losing perfect town status). I still have a few bushes, and I'm focusing more on hybrids, but the major stuff is done. I've build the PWPs I want and created some cozy spots.

My first town "Joy" wasn't planned or prepped. I just played, and let villagers go where ever. It took me about 8 months to finish landscaping and houses. I remember having to completely rodo some areas of my town, because Molly and Keaton ruined my landscaping.

My other towns took a lot less time. I actually had everything written down of how I was going to decorate my homes, the character and town names, etc, before I even got started. Maybe three months? I also brought in bells and furniture from my first town, so it wouldn't take so long to complete.

Well I've "finished" my town many times, so hard to say. When I first got my copy a few years ago, I think I finished my layout within a few months. Then I rebuilt, and took less time. I'm renovating for maybe the fifth time now, and is taking pretty long (since I've been more inspired than ever, and really want to nail it). So currently a work in progress yet again.

without bell forums, aka buying hybrids and stuff, it would take me about a year. but now it takes me at least 1 month with consistent working.

I always begin by removing all trees. That way, I have a blank slate to work with. Then I start planning where I want to place my permanent pwps. Then I start deciding where I might like to have pathways as I play.

tuesday is still a work in progress and it's nineish months old now.

just recently my last stray villager moved away so i have all of my villagers on one side of the river in a cute little neighborhood with the floor entirely covered in flowers that i grew myself. there's also a little park area with a jungle gym, some benches, and a hammock. i didn't even take flowers from the island because i didn't think to do that. i have my "town" side with retail and brewster's and the police station and my town hall, and then in the other corners i've got natural fruit forests and a few other other natural pwps.

but i'm still planning and doing things. it's been a natural evolving.

ruth i'm also working running on the fly. i was resetting a LOT to get a really really good layout but then i got mac as a starting villager and the river is truly difficult but i needed mac in my town like i needed him. anyway, i'm working on the same thing as tuesday with getting all my villagers near me, but i've had some runaways :P hans... he moved in the weirdest most out of the way place and i had to rearrange all my bridges and everything.

i also thought i wanted my mayor's town to be a hotel, but now that plan is coming un done and i have to think a lot more.

the fun part about planning ruth actually is trying to make my more convoluted map as easy and natural to navigate as tuesday. tuesday is, except for one part that i am still working on, very easy to move around in. it's hard to get lost. ruth is more difficult because the river makes lots of isolated, tiny areas... but i'm working on it.

anyway i guess the answer is i prepare my town as i make it, so it is slow and takes a long time
