Hmm...mine were Flora and Molly.
For Flora:
I resetted my first town, and settled on a new one with a worse layout, just to have Flora as a starting villager.
This took me about two hours to do this as well.

For Molly:
I joined about 5 different websites, including TBT, Tumblr, and Reddit, just to find someone who would trade an unoriginal Maple for her. This took about two weeks of searching.

Those were probably not answers you were looking for though. At the time I wasn't familiar with villager trades and the concept of paying for villagers for TBT or bells. Also I did end up getting all ten of my dream villagers but, with the exception of those two, they were all tier 5 and were usually given to me by cyclers.

I robbed a bank, and kidnapped the presidents daughter!

Oh wait no, uhm someone on Gamefaqs was doing a free Villager Adoption and I managed to get Lucky. I would have tried adopting more but I only had 1 free spot so I had to pick between Lucky and a few others.

no Story, this too is what interests me (money, time, any kind of effort,...)

i joined like 2 villager giveaways. won both, but the first one backfired and i had to get him from the other

I found an auction here and one of my friends decided to bid for me

I got my first Francine for 2 mil from Tumblr. When I started my new town, she was a starting villager.

Not for myself, but I dropped 10 mill for Kiki for a friend of mine. I just campsite reset for the villagers I wanted, it never really took more than a couple of days a villager.

I never understood how that "campsite reset"-thing worked, will need to look it up since it seems to do the trick

bought Bunnie for 60,000,000 bells

no jk ;-; still looking for her
I haven't gone through any drastic measures, I just got Ankha from someone extremely generous and nice on here ;-;

I used my cycle town to get Rosie for my main town, then stayed up until 4.30 AM to plot reset her in Kibble. Not much compared to some but I was pretty tired by the end.

There's a good guide to it here http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/997811-animal-crossing-new-leaf/67312420, I do it in my cycle town and my town Mania. Managed to pick Marina up with it fairly quickly :).

Well, I restarted my town on May 7th and I got Eugene after 2 days have passed. I used the reset trick for that.

no effort, actually. was resetting for a great map and LO AND BEHOLD whitney was there. she's my only original villager left and i never ever ever want to let her go. EVER.

I wanted Sly and I knew he wasn't extremely popular so I waited for a while until someone was giving him away for free.
I always end up giving people "thank you" bells or presents when they give me something for free, too.
