How exactly do color variations work?

I know items have color variations and there’s the ones in the nook miles shop that you have to trade for with other players. However with the ones that show up in nook’s cranny, can you get other versions to show up later or do you have to trade with others for those too? For example if I get a red gumball machine at the shop is there a chance a pink one will show up for sale later or will I only ever get red ones and need someone else to give me a pink one?
