How does the whole trading/buying villagers work?

What specifically confuses you?

When a villager wants to move you, they "ping" and they give a moving out day. On that day, someone from another town can come visit the villager in their moving "boxes", and convince the villager to move to their town.

Some people pay for the privilege of asking that villager to move to their town. Others trade villagers.
That's pretty much it.

When a villager is in boxes, someone from another town can go in and invite them to move in with them. When you talk to them there will be an option to invite them or not. Everything else works just like normal trading or selling, except with villagers instead of items.

For buying villagers, I would say it's best for the visitor to talk to the villager first before paying so you can save yourself from potentially getting scammed. If you pay first the host can easily end the session and you're left with nothing, but if you talk to the villager first and try to run away the host can always flick the switch on you so it's really the safest way imo.
