How does compatibility work?

Hi everyone!

So I'm using the compatibility chart found on one of the apps for the game, mostly out of curiosity.

Stella moved out and Norma replaced her. (Both normals)

Stella had max compatibility with two villagers, and got along with everyone, while Norma has very low compatibility with two villagers.

I thought it was just a matter of personnality, but apparently there are other factors?

Also, what does it actually change? Are they just more likely to have disagreements?

This is actually the first time I've heard about villager compatibility... how does that affect the game?

I'm not sure, that's why I'm starting this thread haha! I don't even know how it works. I have an app to help me track my items, fossils, villagers etc, and it has a "compatibility map" included.
I didn't know this was a thing, so I'm curious how it works!

I'm just guessing...

Maybe it's the interaction between them. Some will probably pick fights more often. Some will probably become friends faster and you get to see them hang out.

That's what I would have assumed to as for the effects, but I thought it was only influenced by personality but apparently there's more to it since two normals have different compatibilities? Maybe sub personnalities have something to do with it?

I have an app called ACNH life that has that too! This is what my screen for it says:

I have no idea if I’m reading the chart right at all but if I am then it’s strange to me as some of the villagers it seems to say are really compatible have never talked on my island. It’s also interesting because in all my years of NL obsession I never knew this existed.

Yeah, the ACNH Life is the one that has the chart.

Tex used to pick fights while he was on my island, most often with Fang.

Off-topic: my ACNH Guide app isn't opening correctly since this morning. It just shows a white screen. Haven't updated since yesterday, so it can't be caused by that.

I actually didn't read the explanation on how star sign, species and personalities were affecting it, oops!
I'd be super interesting to find a chart/graph that shows how it works!
I don't think it matters THAT much, I'd have to look more closely into it but I'm not sure all the fights I've seen necessarily were between low compatibility villagers?

Probably, they just updated it. It shows villagers favourite colours and style now, which is a lifesaver! (I used to have a little paper where I wrote it all down with me every time I was shopping for gifts haha) and a turnip price prediction function too

Lil bump to say that today is Cherry's birthday, and Flora came to celebrate with her! Flora and Cherry have a compatibility of 5 (seems to range from 3 to 12) so I'm tempted to assume it doesn't play a huge part in villagers interactions...
