I was just wondering how to exchange items with people. I know that if you wanted to trade an item for bells you could do it through Retail, without any hassles, but is the only way to exchange/trade items is for both players to drop the items they want to trade? If that's the only way, if a player tricks you and doesn't drop their item, can you just turn off your 3ds and it won't save?

Dropping items is the only way. If somebody tries to pull a fast one on you, yes you can power off the 3DS or you can just flip the WiFi switch on the side to cut the connection. This will end your session in an error and the things that happened will not be saved and it will save you from Resetti.
