How do you see villager conversations?

I’ve seen videos on here and reddit of villagers talking with speech bubbles to each other. I’ve never seen this on my island, they just talk to each other silently.
Does it just happen randomly or am I doing something wrong?

If you see them talking silently you have to go up and talk to them to see the conversation.

Hmm maybe I’ve been standing in the wrong place because when I’ve tried that I end up just interrupting and one villager walking away.

Sometimes, when you see two villagers together, they're actually just greeting each other, most probably the reason why one walked away when you approached.

When villagers chat, you can actually see them nodding. And when you talk to either one of them, you should actually enter their conversation.
