Real time all the way. When I first played the original AC ten years ago I played properly until I got fed up of missing KK Slider too many times and then started messing with the date/time settings - that was the beginning of the end.
If just once I rolled the clock back to buy turnips or see KK perform, I know from that point onwards that time/date is meaningless and it's just down to "do I want to deny myself what I want?".
For that reason, I keep it pure. It's not necessarily convenient and it doesn't feel nice to realise you missed something you wanted but it's essential for the whole system to work. If you play it as intended then you'll be looking at the clock (I'm just kidding, you'll be looking at a phone or taskbar) saying "damn, the shops will be closed in ten minutes!" and that's a unique experience that I'm not going to discard this time around.
Last night I realised I needed more money to pay off my loan and that I'd need to scrape together 1K in order to get to the island so I could bug hunt for about 10-15 minutes which would leave me enough time to get back, sell my catches, pay off my loan and still have time to speak to Nook so that my next house expansion could be ready the next day.
I love that! I love playing, doing something else for half the day, then remembering that something else will be going on now that evening's rolled around. If I could just change to any time and any day then I'd cheat myself out of that experience. Unfortunately I think most if not all will have to learn this the hard way just as I did ten years ago. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.
This is so, so true. Exactly how I feel about my experience with time-traveling as well, very eloquently put!
