I think you're catalog can be shared and can now order items from HHD. I have the HHD built in my 3DS but never actually played it.

Linking the two adds some giant items from HHD to your ACNL catalog, according to the nintendo support page.

Actually you can. I have physical copies of both. Isabelle will guide you and tell you to remove the NL cart and insert the HHD cart. The game will then save info and link the games together and Isabelle will tell you to remove HHD and put NL back into the game slot and you can enjoy the game linked. It’s a really clever way to link physical games together and probably the only DS or 3DS game that won’t go to the shut down screen or error screen if the game cart is removed but only in the linking option mode.
