How do you know when you and a villager are best friends?

Can you be best friends/maxed out a friendship with more than one, or all of your villagers, or can only on be your best friend? and how do i know if ive maxed out a friendship/became best friends? Thank you! xo

This is what the Acnl wiki has to say:

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, there are various indicators as to the level of friendship between the player and a villager. For example, villagers with a medium to high level of friendship will send presents to the player spontaneously, or even give them in person. Villagers with a very high level of friendship will visit the player's house unannounced, bring presents to the players house, and may even ask the player to bring them rare fish or bugs. Furthermore, villager who feel friendly with the player will wave or bow when called using the megaphone. Having a high friendship level can result in the player obtaining a picture of that villager.

Also from this, it indicates that you can have more than one villager with a high level of friendship/best friend, hope this helps.

I have 5 towns, and I noticed that villagers will not ping very often when you first start playing. (This is actually a good thing because when they do ping, they are usually going to tell me they plan on moving.)
When our frienship level gets higher, they will ping me as soon as I walk by them. In my new town, there are about three villagers that always run up to me when I start up my game. I know I have a higher frienship with them. My newest villager never pings. I know that he will when we become better friends.

What LilRainy said. Some of my villagers drop by my house unanounced and give me gifts for no appearant reason. This indicates that they're pretty chill with you, and you got a big chance of recieving their picture
