how do you get villager photos?

i must be the only one whe hasn't got a villager photo yet

i'm constantly gifting my villagers presents, which were specifically picked out to match their style and were wrapped up and i talk to all of them all the time and i can change their catchphrase and stuff like that
i've also reached maximum friendship with a few of them like axel and raymond
but for some reason i haven't got a photo
am i missing something??

It just takes awhile honestly. That's the best answer I can give.

I gifted them god-knows-how-many wrapped non-native fruit and door wreathes. I got all the max friendship reactions before the photos. It took me till the beginning of May to get photos.

The weird thing is, my island starters weren't my first to give the villager photos. I got it from my fourth islander that moved onto my island of all things? Poncho is one of my first islanders and I haven't gotten his photo yet.

the one who has been on my island the longest would be axel, i got the final reaction from him ages ago so hopefully i'll get his photo soon ♡

i guess this way is better than in new leaf when you just got the photos from amiibo's or april fools day lol

Keep giving them gifts every day, and talking to them. I have had relatively good luck whereas I normally have bad luck, so just keep trying and you'll get one soon, hopefully!

I don't want to go in-depth on the mechanics in case it spoils people (how the sausage is made, etc.) but tip: give them expensive gifts for better odds of receiving an item in return (which could include the photo) instead of bells. Also as your friendship improves, so do your odds of receiving the photo. So just keep going with the gifts (personally I would rather give them nice stuff that matches their style or fruits than expensive stuff that looks bad in their home), and good luck. Also, talk to them lots to do quests for them and stuff, since they can give you the photo that way, I believe.

I have 5/10 of my villagers' photos. One of my starters (Genji) is still holding out on me, and he's my favourite too, I certainly don't neglect him or treat him wrong, haha. We're at close to maxed friendship and I still haven't got it, one day I will win the dice roll.

as for gifts, i’ve been able to get all my villagers’ photos by crafting hanging terrariums/iron wall lamps and wrapping them in wrapping paper from nook’s cranny! i give them these items specifically because they guarantee the bonus you get when they return a gift back to you for giving them a gift AND since villagers are unable to put up wall mounted items, they won’t be displayed in their homes! hope this helped!

I don't have a villager photo either. But I'm not best friends with any of my villagers yet. I've been trying to get Marina to change her room to suit her more and I have noticed that I'm closer friends with her than the others.

I know what you mean! I can't bring myself to give Marshal anything because of his hyper-curated coffee utopia, and if I had Julian I would be even more afraid to mess up his house, it's so pretty...

10k-20k is the sweet spot! But I think it's the most important thing to just keep gifting them (probability-wise) and to not go broke in the process, lol.

Just a few days ago, I discovered that the ideal present to increase friendship is the gift-wrapped iron wall lamp since you are guaranteed to get an item in return. Also, villagers don't display wall furniture so you don't have to fear destroying their interiors. It's a little costly for materials if you're going to gift this to 10 villagers daily though...

But before I knew the above, I gave them wrapped fruits. I've gotten 2 villagers pics from this one. I still alternate between this and the above.

As people already stated, wrapped foreign fruit seems to be the most cost-effective way, though it takes a bit of time. If you find cute clothes or items that could fit their houses, that works well too. I believe if the item sells for more than 2.5k bells, they'll always give you another item in return (I could be wrong).

tbh i didn't realise how picky i was about their houses until i started gifting them furniture
i've started to focus on one villager at a time to get the picture quicker but now i feel like i'm just rushing through the friendship

it's weird because axel has been on my island since around the beginning of april and i've spoke to him and given him sport stuff everyday since he is a jock so surely i should at least have his photo

I have gotten nine villager photos, without time traveling. There's a lot of luck involved, but basically I just gift wrapped gifts everday. To increase your chances, talk to them a lot and try to get requests. Sending letters may help too, but I never did much of that. Good luck!
