How do you determine your 'Dream Villagers'?

I've been playing ACNL for a month now, and was wondering why people cared so much about villagers and how do you determine them, on looks, personality? It seems to me as if there are favourites such as Marshal but I can't lie I do think he looks cool xD
I personally don't mind and my 3 favourites are ones that I have that were there or moved in, Bluebear, Pekoe & Fang.

The only villager I could say I did not like was Wendy which I made leave by wacking her with nets, trapping her and complaining about her etc.

I determine them by looks to be honest xD Marshal is my absolute favorite.

I also determine by personalities too, my favorites ones are Smug, Lazy, Snooty and Cranky.

Mostly my dream villagers come from villagers I had in my WW game. I have some weird emotional attachment to the majority of them ^_^

I completely forgot what villagers I had back on Wild World were xD
I didn't even speak to villagers back then. It was all about upgrading my house :3.

I determine them by colour and whether or not they will look good in my town. xD I'm making a sky themed town and I'm aiming at having mainly blue/blue white villagers.
I love Wendy! I have her in my town.

I base it off of who I know and who I've seen.
Phoebe became my dreamie because after she moved in, she was really sweet. Same goes for Maple, but I've seen Peanut and Eugene.
Carmen is really pretty, and I need another peppy in my town, so she's here.
Truffles was in my CF town and she was an amazing friend.
Rosie was in the movie, and she was really cool, then Hamlet because he's cute. ;3

If I don't have any sort of attachment to them from a previous game, I pick them out based on their personality and looks. I look for villagers whose designs are my favourite among those with the same personality.

I decided I wanted one of every personality to ensure a variety of villager conversations. So, I went through and chose my favorite villager, looks-wise or who I had previously had in WW, for each personality type. Since there are 8 personalities, that allowed me to choose 2 more villagers based on looks or personality

i do think the amount of unique-ness of a character does effect it, though.

First impression is based off of looks first, then personality. But final thoughts are based off of personality, and if they are cute too, I automatically love them! ​

I do almost entirely by appearance, I don't feel about it at all as I usually form a good friendship when I like their appearance to start with and then spend time with them. I also like Octavian, Tangy and Savannah because I had him in past games and it's a very nostalgic feeling to have them again (the ones I do get again anyway, most are worth 10-15mil+ that I like of COURSE haha)

My only dream villagers are Wolfgang and Aurora because they were my favorites from my first Animal Crossing game, Wild World. I really don't care about looks that much. I'd find it boring to just sit through and pick out the most unique or cutest villagers. I love all my current villagers that were given to me by random chance, and the game is much more fun to me that way. And I like the idea of not judging a villager just by their appearance and getting to know them, I guess? I'd honestly be happy with my current village, but I just miss Wolfgang and Aurora too much.

By both looks, personality, and animal species I suppose. I like wolves, deers, cub bears, squirrels, octopi, tigers, and rabbits. I prefer to have at least one of each personality type. Sadly, I won't be having any Uchi villagers in my dream village unless it's Mira (just traded her).

For me it's not just about appearence. If they treat me nicely chances are I'll like them more than others.

I admit, though. Kevin and Bree I met in dream towns I visited and it was love at first sight. Ed and Amelia were my favs from GC.
