How do you determine who your dreamies are?

For me, most of "dreamies" are the villagers I absolutely loved in New Leaf! Tia is basically my ultimate dreamie. I fell in love with her teapot design and in my latest village, she was one of my starters. She's a bit underrated in my opinion, or am I wrong?
The only dreamie I want that wasn't from my New Leaf village is Judy. I know some people think she's a bit creepy but I love her retro/twinkly "anime" eyes.

A lot of my dreamies were determined basically since the first AC game released. I've been playing since the Gamecube days, and the only one I didn't play through was City Folk. Quite a few were just random move ins or starting villagers during a play through that were awesome.

As for Tia - I think she's probably the best Elephant (sorry Dizzy). She's definitely got a cool design, and I'd love to have her if I ever started a food themed island.

I just look at the list of villagers online and pick the ones I like the look of. The theme of my island is underrated villagers so I pick the ones that not everyone has. Like my ultimate dreamie is Gigi and I ended up buying her amiibo back in 2017 before they were really expensive

Idk why but I tend to like the villagers people either forget about or people usually don’t like.
I try to have different dreamies in each one of my towns. Except Gigi. She is in every town of mine bc I love her.

A lot of my dreamies are villagers I've had in past games. I like the idea of having them all together again on this little island paradise. Plus a lot of them moved away against my will and I won't have to worry about that here.

I don't look for the popularity in villagers but rather the personality, I love every single one of my dreamies and just wish we could fit more people on our island since my island is actually my brothers island, and obviously he gets to choose which villagers he wants and I get to choose which ones I want. Though there's not enough space for all of them so I just wish we could fit more villagers on our island. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this.

I got the vast majority of my dreamies in New Leaf. In New Horizons my dreamies are determined by the characters I could not obtain in NL. I personally look at the character's design and if I click with them.

For me, it's about who I form a connection with. I never really had "dreamies" until New Leaf, as for all of the previous games I just kinda let the game cycle itself until I found villagers I liked. Some of them are based on who I've had in previous games, and who give me the most nostalgia, like Cookie, Tom, Pierce, and Static. Others come as I like their design but it's really who can win my heart at this point.

I only have one dreamie, Frita the sheep.
I had Frita in my New Leaf town and didn't even notice she had moved in honestly, really paid no attention to her at all. One day I was playing hide-and-seek with a friend so I went into her house to hide. After that I pretty much became obsessed with her, so much so I was considering getting a tattoo of her before corona happened.
So for me a dreamie has to have some sort of emotional significance. She was a friend to me when I had none and that's why I love her so much
Also she looks like a hamburger & french fries

I think it's hard to determine exactly who they are before playing the game, it's like a whole process in the end lol

My advices are :
1. Before playing think of the theme of your future Island and pick some villagers you really like the design and that are fitting your theme to make your first dreamie list. (Maybe also choose one dreamie per personality)
2. Then forget all of that during the first part of the game (from the whole tutorial until the KK concert) and enjoy discovering villagers by Island hopping or random move in. You could discover new dreamies of yours.
3. Now you will have a lot of hours in the game and terraforming, maybe a lot of time spent playing with your friends and talking on this forum... and so maybe discovered new cute villagers ! With all your experience make your final dreamie list and hunt for them !

I also think that for a dreamie to be a dreamie, the villager needs to remind you of something/someone you love or you need to have a connection with him ingame, liking what he's saying to you and his whole animations and expressions (not just his design).

I don't really have dreamies at all. I am having so much fun just meeting different animals ^_^ I'll settle on my dreamies later on. I guess my only dreamie as of right now is Tabby. But I don't think I'll get here until much much later. I'm in no rush since I have all the amiibo cards. My goal right now is to eventually have every single new villager and earn their photos (not hunting for them even, I'll let it happen organically) then after that, pursue dreamies. But I don't plan on it before a full in game year passes first. When that time comes I'll determine it based on the appearance but also the bonds I make with the villagers I meet. I'm letting my tastes and relationships develop before i make any kind of decision ^_^

First I see if I want to keep any if my starters, then I look at personality lists and pick the ones I like the most.

For now I'm still cycling through as many villagers as possible since I can get three of my five missing dreamies with cards.

Pocket Camp was our first game so that’s where I began to have favorites and least favorites. I really like grumpy and funny personalities so that gives me a nice lot to choose from. My wife would probably prioritize cute design and funny personality for her favorites lol.

Since I was new to the animal crossing franchise as a whole, I just looked up a list of all the villagers in NH and looked at what ones I thought looked cool/cute. Also I love wolves so they ended up taking 4/10 spots straight away xD

Some are ones I had and loved in new leaf, others are ones I connected with and some are ones that I liked the design of and I want to get to see if I connect with them.

My dreamies are just villagers I feel like I have connected with the most, and whose designs I like Static and Muffy were both in my NL town so there is some nostalgia there, though there are also some NL favourites that didn't make it to my current island such as Roscoe. I also attempted to have 2 villagers of each species but ended up with 2 squirrels, 2 sheep, 2 frogs, 1 alligator, 1 cub, 1 cat and 1 hamster loool. I feel like my dreamies also change over time

Personally, I went through a list with all of the villagers and made a shortlist of anyone I vaguely liked based on that. Then i bolded every villager I really liked, and some I loved so much that I added exclamation marks, so I knew that I wanted to have them on my island definitely. From those bolded villagers I made another shortlist with about 15/20 villagers, some that certainly are dreamies and I want on my island 100%, but with others I deliberately didn't decide yet. I'm just seeing whoever comes up on Nook Miles Trips first, and decide that I'd rather keep going until I see someone else, or to let them move onto my island. Then, once they live there, I'll see how I feel about them and if I want to switch them out for someone else or not. In this way, they at least get the chance to live on my island for a bit. Of course this is all luck based (I still have Rodney hanging out on my island now lol) but it has been working nicely so far!
