The title. I found this feature SO annoying in New Leaf. How does this work in New Horizons?

I don't have a full answer, but my experience with the void.

It can hold at least 4 villagers, possibly more. They do not get cleared with time, the villagers have to all get moved in. I know this because the void conflicts with amiibos. If you have an amiibo villager, you cannot invite them if they are already queued to move into your town.

In my case I wanted Erik, it said "he was moving" and couldn't come to my island. I then bit the bullet and let a bunch of villagers leave and allowed random voided villagers to move in until Erik finally showed up.

The villagers will mention the town they came from when you first talk to them, then never bring it up again. They don't seem to inherent catch-phrases or clothes...or at least the ones I received were never given any.

My friend came to my town a while back but none of his villagers were in the process of moving. If one of his villagers moves out now will they come to my town?

Anyone who moves out now does not have a chance to move to your town unless another visit either way happens.

Also, you can prevent a voided villager from moving in if you invite someone from a mystery island I'm sure. Voided villagers don't claim plots until the next day if it still available.

Ok thanks! This was so helpful!

Do you know if there's a way to clear the void without moving anyone in?

I do not. Indirectly while doing something else, I had moved in 3 other villager via amiibos, time travelled over a year (April 2019 -> May 2020), and played at least 50 in game days. Still I could not get my Erik amiibo to move in as he was still in my void queue.
