how do i build an axe? (read for further explanation)

since my sister, the first resident, already donated 5 bugs/fish to tom nook, i was never able to get the crafting recipe for the axe. does anyone know how to get this recipe without having to do so?

It took me almost the whole day to figure out they even had a second tab with other stuff (and I was really excited when I did find it out haha)
