How do Dodo Codes Work?

I assumed Dodo Codes were something you gave to your friends to make sure only certain friends could enter your town, instead of ANY online friend, but I've seen some people mention stuff that now makes me believe this is wrong. Can someone please explain to me how Dodo Codes work? It would be helpful to know. And also sorry if this is the wrong place for this question!

From my understanding so far it is a temporary code that you give out, someone can search for your town by that code and don’t have to add them to your friend list. Visiting a town by dodo code limits what you can do. I am not too sure what all the limits are but I know you cannot chop down trees.
