The thing about my dreamies is... I didn't know they were my dreamies until I actually spent time with them. For most of them, anyway.
I had Filbert and Maple as starter villagers, and I got attached to them right away. I remember Maple from older games, so there's some nostalgia there. I think I would have wanted her in my town as a dreamie if I didn't start with her. Same with Filbert--he became an instant favorite the moment I started playing. Almost 70% of my ACNL screenies involve him. xD
O'Hare, my ultimate favorite, was a random move in. I think the 7th villager to move in, actually. I let him move in because he was in a good spot and that's it. I didn't know I would love him so much. xD Now, if I ever lose my town or lose him, I would want him back immediately.
I found Julian and Hamphrey in camp. Hamphrey reminds me of my deceased pet hamster. ; w; so I really wanted him in my town when I saw him. Julian was a unicorn and I stopped everything because uNICORN IN MY CAMP.
Zucker was a freebie from a friend. He was my first adopted villager, and he came from two different towns. xD
I traded for Willow with a user on TBT. xD

So yeah, a lot of luck and non-pickyness was involved in my case.

Stitches was originally in my town. The rest I've been fortunate enough to come across on this forum on cycling threads, and Colton came from a person on tumblr. I exchanged him for the ice wall.

In my previous town I got all of my dream villagers through villager/campsite resetting and my own cycle town.
My current town I happened to start with 2 on the first map that met my requirements,
I had one of my dreamies living in my alt town already so I moved them in,
got another before I managed to get my first 10 villagers,
then I reset my cycle town and within the first 9 villagers got 3 more through uber luck (1 starter, 1 moved in on day 2, and reset for another).

and my last from trading Marshal or Julian ~ canny remember which as I ended up with both in my cycle town around that time.

I don't feel right giving (or accepting) Bells or items for a villager, so I spent a lot of time looking or resetting for a lot of them.

Simply from luck, cycling threads, and trades. I never have enough bells so auctions never work out for me.

I really only had one "dreamie", and that was Chrissy (because I started with Francine and wanted to have them as a pair).
I tried for a while to get her on TBT, but couldn't. So, I bought another game cartridge, borrowed my brother's 3DS and cycled for her myself. I got her, moved her into my main town, and tada! Instant Chrissy.

Note: for the most part my dreamies have more or less grown on me to become dreamies over time, rather than specifically picking them out. By this I mean of who I have so far I was only really looking for Diana, the rest (Avery, Marshal, Molly, Pashmina, and Rosie) were not dreamies until I had them in my town for a while.

I don't really use the term "dreamie," but I got really lucky with some of my villagers. I looked at TBT one morning at 1:54, and someone had posted an emergency Skye giveaway at 1:53. I never have typed so fast and I had her by 2:00. Then, I managed to win a Lolly giveaway. Flora and Fauna came with the town, with the help of some resets. I kept the reset for Fauna and Mallary (not popular, but a friend had her and I like her), didn't even know Flora and was shocked to see a big, pink ostrich, but she's now a big fave.
Recently got Erik from the campsite. I don't think I was resetting. I know I wasn't resetting when I got Marshal from the campsite, but he's no dreamie of mine.
